Jackets make it 11-0
Sometimes the first-round playoffs will produce an exciting football game. However, Friday night at Williamsburg’s Findley-Legion Field, the crowd began to exit at halftime as the host Yellow Jackets had the game in hand.
Ahead 47-14 at the half, Williamsburg rolled to their 11th straight win of the season with a 60-22 victory over the Hazard Bulldogs. Lucky for Hazard, the score could have been much worse.
Like in many of their games this season, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a big lead in the first quarter and put the pressure on the opposing team. Williamsburg made it look easy. How easy? The Jackets scored the first seven times they had the ball and every time they touched the ball in the first half.
Williamsburg coach Jim Black felt his team was focused from the get-go. “I thought we played about as well as we can. We came into the game focused,” he said in his post-game show.
“It was good to get that first one under your belt,” added Black. The second playoff game might not be as easy as the Jackets host district rival, Lynn Camp, a team they beat earlier in the season 25-18 in a penalty plagued game.
Black feels the key to this week’s game is mistakes. “If we don’t make any silly mistakes we will be in the ballgame.”
The Jackets (11-0) certainly didn’t make any mistakes in the Hazard game as Williamsburg lit up the fire truck lights seven times in the first half.
The first touchdown of the game came in the opening minutes after Williamsburg started at their own 35 yard line. Senior quarterback Andy Greer went to the air and found senior Tyler Ayers open for a short pass. Then an eight-yard run by senior Will Hill to the 46 yard line gave the Jackets a first-down.
Greer went through the middle of the Hazard defense for a 22 yard run and the Jackets were off to a good start. Hill and Greer combined for 15 yards on the next two carries before the talented QB went back to the air. He missed his two targets before running the ball into the end zone on third down from the 19 yard line with 9:11 on the clock.
The defense responded as well for the Jackets as they held Hazard to three and out. A short punt and Williamsburg roll, left the Jackets with a first down at their own 49 yard line. Five plays and two minutes later, Hill found his way into the end zone for a five yard touchdown. A 25 yard pass to Matt Jones helped set up the TD. Greer ran in the PAT for a 14-0 lead.
The Bulldogs got a little momentum on offense and pushed the ball down the field before stalling. Facing a fourth and five from the Williamsburg 38, the Bulldogs tried a fake punt that was stuffed out. Hazard came up four yards short and the Jackets took over from their own 37 with 3:24 left in the period.
That was plenty of time for the Jackets. A 14 yard pass to Alec Day gave the Jackets a first down at the Hazard 26. Greer followed with a pass to Jones but a holding penalty pushed the ball back to the 32. Greer connected with William Renfro on the ensuing play for another six points. Chase Hamblin tacked on the extra point for a 21-0 lead with 1:31 left on the clock.
That proved to be enough time for two more touchdowns. Hazard’s Durrell Olinger hit D. J. Hoskins for an 80 yard TD that took just 22 seconds. Then once Williamsburg got the ball at the 42 yard line, Hill broke away on the first play from scrimmage for a 68 yard TD with :52 left. The touchdown sent Williamsburg into the second period with a 27-6 lead.
Greer connected with Matt Jones and Tyler Ayers for a pair of touchdowns in the second period while Hill added his third of the game on a 15 yard run with :16 left in the half. Once Hamblin’s kick went through the uprights, the Jackets led 47-14.
Williamsburg accounted for 438 of their 600 yards in the first half. Hill had seven carries in the first half for 154 yards while Greer had 187 through the air.
The Jackets cruised through the second half adding two touchdowns. Jones was on the end of a third quarter pass for 17 yards while Thomas Frazier rolled into the end zone from eight yards out in the final period.
