Jackets get stung
The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets saw their three game win streak come to a halt Friday night by the #5 ranked Cloudland High School Highlanders, 24-10.
“We played a very good football team,” said Williamsburg coach Jim Black. The hard hitting game saw the Jackets take an early 10-0 lead on a 25 yard field goal by Chase Hamblin and an eight-yard TD by Charlie Bryant.
But, the lead didn’t last as the Highlanders went on a 24-0 run to win the game.
Injuries to Hamblin and junior quarterback Thomas Frazier played a key role in the loss. “We played good as a team, you just can’t overcome some of those injuries,” Black said in his post-game show. “I told everybody this was a good football team.”
Both Hamblin and Frazier are expected to be back in action when the Yellow Jackets take on the Pineville Mountains Lions Friday night at Findley-Legion Field. It will be the district opener and a key game for the Yellow Jackets, who ran through the district undefeated a year ago.
Williamsburg, now 3-1, will take on the 2-2 Mountain Lions. Pineville opened the season with a 17-12 win over McCreary Central, a team the Jackets defeated, 34-0. Pineville then edged Berea 12-6 before losing to Middlesboro 40-13 and Lynn Camp 55-6.
Williamsburg meanwhile opened the season with a 48-14 win over Jellico then routed the Raiders of McCreary Central. The Jackets got past Oneida, Tennessee, 13-7 before falling last week to the Highlanders.
