Jackets Do IT
The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets lost to its arch-rival, Whitley County 78-68 back in December on its own court.
Williamsburg got some revenge Tuesday night as they upset the Colonels 66-57 in the district tourney.
Williamsburg (9-16) advances to the semifinals where they will play the Corbin Redhounds Thursday night at 8:15 p.m.
“It was a big win for our school and community,” said Williamsburg coach Donnie Haynes.
“They had a good game plan and stuck with it,” said Whitley County coach Darrell Guffey. “They hit the boards hard tonight. They were really strong down low, they were bigger and stronger inside.”
“Our kids played hard and that’s all I can ask,” said Guffey.
The Jackets game plan was simple, keep the ball out of the hands of Whitley County senior Sammie Wilson. Wilson was held to 14 points.
If the defense on Wilson was a surprise then the offensive game of Williamsburg junior Michael McRay and senior John Reynolds was the difference for the Yellow Jackets.
McRay and Reynolds hit some big three point shots early that allowed the Jackets to gain a 19-11 lead early in the second period.
Williamsburg shot out to a 5-0 lead when Reynolds hit a three pointer and McRay followed with a jumper.
Travis Roaden got the Colonels on the scoreboard with a basket but senior Tyler Ayres hit a lay-up at the 4:01 mark. McRay was fouled on a three-pointer with 3:27 on the clock and hit all three free throws that pushed the Jackets ahead, 10-4.
Whitley County (9-17) made a run in the second quarter and tied the score at 19-19 when eighth grader Cody Jones hit a pair of free throws then followed with a basket from close range. Senior Adam Prewitt got in the scoring act with back to back baskets and the game was tied. The Jackets moved back out to a four point lead as John McRay went inside for Williamsburg.
However, Jones and Wilson scored the final four points of the half as the teams went to the dressing room tied at 23-23.
Whitley County took its biggest lead (27-23) of the game early in the third quarter on back to back baskets by senior Travis Raper. But, Michael McRay hit a pair of free throws then followed with a three pointer that put the Jackets ahead for good at 28-27.
Leading 42-38, Williamsburg broke the game open with back to back three pointers by McRay and Kevin Caddell for a 48-38 lead.
Reynolds gave the Jackets its biggest lead in the game, 53-40. The Colonels never recovered.
