It’s going to be a BUSY weekend…
Every now and then, a two-or-three-day period comes along where there is so much going on it is just about impossible to keep track of it all. This coming weekend is definitely one of those occasions, so I thought that I would try to condense most of it into a column in order to make it easier for folks to know when and where to be if you’re looking for something fun to do between April 20-23.
First, we have Colonel Fest in downtown Corbin, and the Whitley County Extension Office’s 9th Annual Earth Day event in Williamsburg. Both of these events are taking place this Saturday, April 22, and both have preview stories dedicated to them elsewhere in this week’s edition. For full details, please find those stories either in print or online.
Another Earth Day celebration that is taking place in Williamsburg Saturday is the “Sowing Seeds for Jesus” event at Elm Street Baptist Church. This will be held from 2-4 p.m., and will give kids an opportunity to plant flowers that will later be used as altar decorations. Those who participate are encouraged to return the following day at 11 a.m. for the church’s regular Sunday morning worship service.
A couple of exciting new events that will be taking place in Whitley County this weekend are the Small Farms Conference, being presented by Kentucky State University, and the American Indian Heritage Weekend, which will be taking place at the Cumberland Falls State Resort Park.
The KSU Small Farms Conference is a free two-day event happening at the Whitley County Extension Office in Goldbug between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on April 21-22. A broad range of topics will be covered, including business strategies, building a digital presence, bee keeping, predator management, disaster preparedness and more. For more information, see the advertisement in this week’s paper. It includes a QR code that, when scanned, will take you directly to the event registration page.
The American Indian Heritage Weekend sounds like a very interesting event, with a full slate of presentations and demos taking place between April 21-23. Also free and open to the public, the festivities are set to kick off down at Cumberland Falls this Friday at 7 p.m. Vendors will be set up beginning at 10 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, and there will be opportunities to take part in a variety of educational programs throughout the weekend.
The American Indian Heritage Weekend is being presented in collaboration with Kentucky Indigenous Peoples and the Kentucky Native American Heritage Commission. For more info, search for the event on Facebook.
If you still need something else to keep you busy later this week, you might consider checking out the cars and trucks that will be on display at the Annual Corbin Rod Run this Friday and Saturday, April 21-22, at the Corbin Arena. Or, you could check out the Corbin Junior Redhound Theatre as they present ‘the Addams Family’ at Corbin Middle School. Be sure to read the special preview story in this week’s edition for full details, but showings will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
No matter what you decide to do over the next several days, just don’t let me hear anyone say that they’re bored!
