Italian restaurant plans move to downtown Corbin

Chef Richard DiMaggio has operated Basil’s Italian Restaurant off Beatty Ave. for the last few years. He plans to move the restaurant to a new location on Main Street in Corbin by March.

A popular Corbin restaurant is planning a move soon into the heart of downtown Corbin, further improving and enlivening a burgeoning restaurant scene in the heart of the city.

Basil’s Italian Restaurant, which has been located off Beatty Ave. since opening four years ago, will make the move sometime this spring. Owner Chef Richard DiMaggio is hoping to be in the new location at 205 S. Main Street right across from The Dixie Café, by March 1.

“This is part of the city revamp,” DiMaggio said. “The Mayor and some of the city officials asked if we would be interested. There were a couple of locations available, but that is the one that suited us best.”

DiMaggio has made the most of a converted business office, even expanding recently to add a new dining area. But it never was ideal. With renovations to his downtown location, he plans a large open dining area with a retro style, a full bar and other amenities for patrons. He plans to apply for a liquor license after moving to the new location.

Corbin Main Street Manager Andy Salmons said DiMaggio’s decision to move Basil’s into the town’s central business district is a welcome one.

“We are very excited to have Basil’s downtown and believe they will be a great addition to the Main Street family, helping to create a more vibrant and dynamic downtown core,” Salmons said.

DiMaggio said he could move the restaurant to its new location in two days, likely closing for a Sunday and Monday to make the transition.

Basil’s is currently open from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. Friday, and 2:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Saturday. Those hours could expand, however, once it is moved to the new location.

DiMaggio is also expecting to host some cooking classes for those interested in learning how to prepare authentic Italian cuisine.
