Investigators say Corbin house fire ‘suspicious’

Authorities say a fire that consumed an abandoned home off Cumberland Falls Hwy. Sunday was likely the work of an arsonist, but have few leads yet in the case.
At about 5:57 p.m., the Corbin dispatch center received a call of a fire at the house at 44 Bacon Creek Rd. (also known as 3319 Cumberland Falls Hwy.). When firefighters arrived, the unoccupied single-story home was fully engulfed in flames.
“Once they got it down so they could see what was going on, it looked like there were suspicious burn patterns mainly because it was burning in the front door,” Corbin Fire Chief Gary Disney said. “It looked like somebody had started a trash barrel burning and it looked like it had been knocked over against the porch. … of course, it was burned so bad it’s going to be hard to tell what’s going on.”
Disney said it’s possible, but unlikely, that the fire was accidental.
Corbin Police Capt. Tim Helton, who is investigating the blaze, said the home had been vacant for about two years and had no utility service, though a live electrical line did lead from a nearby pole to the home.
“It’s unknown if any type or what type of accelerants were used [to start it]. There were areas of the house that seemed to generate more heat than others,” Helton said. “Right now, we will try to find any possible witnesses to it and ask any to come forward … other than that, without any witnesses, there’s really not much more you can do.”
Helton said the house was bought at auction recently by Amy York.
Firefighters from the Corbin Fire Department fought the blaze for about four hours and left the scene around 10:00 a.m.
