Inman inks with Cumberlands
Ashley Inman became the first female golfer to sign a national letter of intent in Whitley County High School history. “I’m honored,” said Inman, who helped lead the Lady Colonels to their first ever regional title this fall.
Her dedication and hard work finally paid off as University of Cumberlands coach Bill Sergent signed the Whitley County senior Monday afternoon.
“We always try to recruit the local talent,” Sergent said. “It’s finally great to have some local talent.” Sergent was referring to some other up and coming players in the Tri-County area including teammates of Inman at WCHS.
“She will only make us better,” added Sergent who would like to see his Lady Patriots get back to the nationals every year. “We made it five times back in the late 90s and early 2000s.” According to Sergent the last time Cumberlands made the trip to the national tournament was in 2001 when it was held in London.
“It’s close to home,” said Inman of Cumberlands. “I’m sure it will be a lot different than high school. I need to work on my short game.”
Inman recorded her best score during the state tournament when she shot an 89 at the Paducah Country Club.
“I seem to play better under pressure,” said added. “My putting has been good and I play the fairways ok.”
Whitley County coach Junior Peace was also excited about seeing his senior sign with Sergent and the Lady Patriots.
“She has four years experience and is used to playing the longer courses,” said Peace. “She is the first female to sign with a college for golf from Whitley County and we are real excited for her.”
“This is a great accomplishment for one of our players,” added Peace. “They have put in a long summer playing in hot and rainy weather. All the dedication has paid off,” he said.
