The Corbin Lady Redhounds advance to the 13th Region championship game against the Bell County Lady Kats Monday night after posting a 47-43 win over host, Harlan County Saturday.
Bell County reached the final with a 65-56 win over the Whitley County Lady Colonels.
Bell Co. 65, Whitley Co. 56: In the first game Saturday, Bell County hit 28-of-31 free throws, 18-of-21 in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Lady Colonels.
The Lady Kats threatened to blow the game open in the first half when Bell County tool a 33-15 lead with 3:40 in the second period.
However, the Lady Colonels made a run to close out the half, down 35-24 at the half.
Whitley County pulled within three by the end of the quarter (43-40) and made a game of it in the final period. The Lady Colonels pulled within one (43-42), but couldn’t get any closer.
Macy Morris led the Lady Kats with 34 points, most of which came from the foul line. Brandi Smith led the Lady Colonels with 26 points.
The loss ended the 26-year career for Coach Larry Anderson. “It hasn’t sank in yet, but it probably will tonight,” he said.
The Lady Colonels ended the season with a record of 21-11.
Corbin 47, Harlan Co. 43: The Lady Redhounds trailed by as much as eight (23-15) in the first half before coming back to tie the Harlan County Lady Bears in the third quarter.
Trailing 27-23, Miranda Wilson connected on a three-point play then followed with a free throw to tie the game (27-27).
The lead see-sawed back and fourth before the teams went to the final quarter tied at 31-31.
The lead changed hands four times before Holli Disney put the Lady Redhounds ahead for good with :37 left in the game.
Miranda Wilson led the Lady Redhounds with 12 points while Kaitlyn Stittums and Sara Evans led the Lady Bears with 11 points each.
Corbin will take on the Bell County Lady Kats at 7:00 p.m. Monday night for the right to represent the 13th Region in the state tournament next week in Bowling Green.
Bell County hammered Corbin twice during the regular season, 75-55 at Corbin and 78-45 in the Cumberland Falls Invitational. Both games were played in Gilliam Gym at Corbin High School.
