In blazing car, man tried to elude police
A man led police on a short chase through Corbin in a burning vehicle early Tuesday morning, before finally stopping on Old Barbourville Hwy.
Gary J. Neal, 26, of Corbin, was charged with reckless driving, fleeing or evading police, driving on a DUI suspended license and DUI for the incident.
According to a Corbin Police Department news release, officer Steve Douglas attempted to stop a 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier on US 25E at about 1:09 a.m. when he noticed the vehicle was on fire and was being driven in a reckless manner.
Neal allegedly refused to stop and took off at a high rate of speed. Douglas pursued the burning car east on US 25E, then onto the Corbin Bypass. The chase continued down Indian Oaks Road before coming to rest near Old Barbourville Hwy.
Douglas pulled Neal out of the burning Cavalier to safety. Neal was then placed under arrest without incident.
Members of the West Knox Volunteer Fire Department were called to the scene and were able to extinguish the blaze.
Neal was taken to the Knox County Holding Facility.
Douglas was assisted by Cpl. Jason Williams and Patrolman Bill Rose.
