Hydraulic fluid spill closes parts of Main Street in W’burg Friday

A spill of hydraulic fluid early Friday morning tied up traffic along parts of Main Street in Williamsburg for nearly four hours.

Williamsburg Fire Chief James Privett said the spill happened about 5:30 a.m., as crews at Canada Brothers Auto Parts were unloading a crate with 40 five-gallon buckets of hydraulic fluid on it.

"Some way they lost it coming off the truck. We had about seven buckets, no more than eight to bust and turn over," Privett said.
Some of the fluid flowed into the storm drain, which required the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to be notified.

D&P Waste Recovery LLC out of Corbin responded to the scene and used vacuums to remove the fluid from the storm drain, Privett said.

Whitley County Emergency Management was also on the scene.
