‘HOUNDS WIN

The Corbin Redhounds overcame a 21-point deficit to down the Wayne County Cardinals Friday night in Monticello and win their first district game of the season, 35-28.
The teams went to the second quarter tied at 7-7, but Wayne County (5-2) scored on the first play of the second quarter then added another touchdown after a short drive to go ahead 21-7 with 8:32 in the period.
The Redhounds tried to answer after moving the ball from their own 30 yard-line to the Wayne County 11-yard line before the Cardinals stopped senior Bray Foley at the 13-yard line with 5:05 left in the half.
The Cardinals struck for their fourth touchdown a minute later when sophomore quarterback Tyler Guffey hit David Crabtree on a 61-yard pass play to put Wayne County three touchdowns ahead.
Corbin refused to quit and came right back with a long pass of their own to get on the scoreboard. Senior quarterback Ty Cobb started the three-play drive at the Corbin 25-yard line and hit junior Josh Jewell on a 20-yard play to the 45-yard line. After being hit at the line of scrimmage Cobb came right back and teamed up with Hunter Grubb on a 55-yard play that allowed the Redhounds to go to the half with a two-touchdown deficit.
“We made some adjustments and the kids did a good job carrying them out,” said Corbin Coach Steve Jewell. “We changed our coverage. We played a little more zone instead of man-to-man.”
“Obviously, we were disappointed and they were disappointed in themselves at half-time, but we felt like we had an opportunity to get right back in it if we came out and played and didn’t rush things,” Jewell said.
The Redhounds had a chance to cut the margin to a one-touchdown lead after a Wayne County fumble with 1:26 left in the half and the ball resting on the Cardinal’s 32-yard line. Corbin took it to the 17 after a first-down pass to Jewell and a short run by Foley. However, three incomplete passes later the drive ended with the Redhounds turning the ball back over to the Cardinals
“It would have been nice if we had gone in at the half down by one touchdown. We felt like we didn’t capitalize when we had a chance to before half time, but we still felt like we were moving the ball. We just needed to make some adjustments to stop them and hold them to no points in the second half,” Jewell said.
The Redhounds made the best of their second half option of getting the ball to start the quarter. The ‘Hounds started their first drive at their own 46-yard line. After a short carry by Matt Jewell it was Foley getting the pigskin five straight times and running his way down the field. The biggest play came on a second down when the senior rambled from the Corbin 47-yard line to the Wayne County 14. Three plays later he was in the end zone and the Redhounds trailed by one TD.
Wayne County didn’t have the ball long before senior Chris Wright fumbled at the Cardinals’ 35-yard line. Corbin moved the ball down to the 14-yard line before being turned back by the Wayne County defense.
The Cardinals were able to move the ball out to mid-field before Corbin took over on downs with 1:02 left in the third quarter.
A pass to Grubb ended the third period at the Wayne County 25-yard line. Three plays later Foley was in the end zone, tying the game with 11:21 left to play.
Again the defense was stellar allowing Wayne County some short yardage, but the Cardinals had to turn the ball over on downs at the Corbin 29-yard line with 6:57 left in the game.
Coach Jewell went to Foley on the first four plays and responded with runs of 13, five and one before being hit with a two-yard loss at the Wayne County 48-yard line.
A perfect strike from Cobb to Grubb ended in a touchdown that gave the Redhounds a hard-fought lead, 35-28. And it was Grubb that turned the lights out on the home folks with an interception at the Redhounds 49-yard line.
Foley finished the game with 152 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries. Jake Coppock added 44 yards and Matt Jewell had 42 yards. Cobb was 9-of-19 for 212 yards and two touchdowns. Grubb had four catches for 166 yards while Josh Jewell had four catches for 44 yards.
“We felt like we did an overall better job defensively in the second half,” Jewell said. “They burnt us in the first half playing man when we couldn’t get anybody to them when we were blitzing,” Jewell said. “We just didn’t do some of the things we were coached to do, we felt like we had to play tighter on them. Maybe it was a good wake-up call for us and we can use that to our advantage.”
“It was a lot to be proud of (the comeback) and we were proud of the kids,” Jewell said. “Still, we know where we need to get and we are not there yet. It’s a slow progress instead of a quick progress. We have a lot to get to before we play Bell County in two weeks.”
The Redhounds will face the McCreary Central Raiders Thursday night in its annual Homecoming game. The Raiders will bring a 1-5 record to Campbell Field with their only win coming over Knott County Central, 61-26.
“They have a couple of quick kids that do pretty well,” Jewell said. “And, they have a quarterback that runs well in the pocket.”
“The biggest thing is that we can’t let them get any momentum or confidence,” added Jewell. “This is the first time they have come over here for a varsity game.”
