Hounds to host Bell and South this week; Whitley, W’burg gearing up for faceoff
The area basketball schedule was no match for Mother Nature as games across the area and the commonwealth were cancelled because of the snow last Thursday and into the weekend.
The Corbin Redhounds, who defeated Whitley County last Tuesday, 74-60, were scheduled to get back on the floor for the first time Tuesday night
Five Redhounds scored in double figures against the Colonels, led by Hayden Llewellyn with 23.
Trey Wroley added 13, while Eli Pietrowski, Carter Stewart and Brody Wells had 10 points each.
Pietrowski had a double-double grabbing 10 rebounds to go with his 10 points.
The game against Frederick Douglas at South Laurel last Saturday was among those cancelled because of the weather.
“Although we hated to lose that game, we really needed a stretch of practice,” said Coach Tony Pietrowski. “I think we were able to fine tune a few things, add some things and look at some areas of concern.”
The stretch of games we have ahead is daunting to say the least,” he said.
The Redhounds will be back at home this week, hosting Bell County on Friday and then South Laurel in the annual rematch on Tuesday.
“South Laurel has an excellent basketball team,” Pietrowski said. “A big portion of the district seeding will be decided this week. You throw in a team like Bell County in the middle of that stretch and we will be tested for sure.”
Williamsburg Yellow Jackets
Williamsburg was looking to snap a two-game losing streak as they faced Barbourville in the opening round of the 13th Region All “A” Classic Saturday at Harlan, losing 65-64.
Connor Lay and Martin Shannon led the Jackets with 17 points each.
Lay pulled off the double-double on the night, adding 10 rebounds.
“Yes, it was a tough loss that came down to the wire,” said Coach Eric Swords. “I thought our kids gave great effort and we had two good looks in the closing seconds to win the game, but they didn’t fall. We had too many turnovers and that’s what we have to correct for the upcoming games as well.”
Williamsburg will return to action Friday night when they host South Laurel.
The Jackets will host Powell County Saturday.
Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
Williamsburg will wrap up the week and the homestand Tuesday night against Whitley County.
Whitley County Colonels
Coming off of Tuesday’s loss to Corbin, Whitley County had been scheduled to travel to South Laurel to take on Rockcastle County Saturday in the Raymond Reed Classic.
That game was cancelled.
The Colonels continued on the road Tuesday night against Barbourville.
Whitley County is scheduled to play at Clay County Thursday before returning home to host Thomas Nelson on Saturday.
Tipoff Saturday is set for 3 p.m.
The Colonels will finish up the week with a trip to Williamsburg Tuesday night.
