Kentucky High School golf season got under full swing Friday with the 5-Star Lafayette General Invitational at Picadome Golf Course in Lexington. The Corbin Redhounds fared well in their first tournament of the season placing fourth in the 19-team field.
Conner Maguet led the Redhounds with a 68 just one stroke behind Stephen Stallings of Louisville St. Xavier and West Jessamine’s Travis Rose. Maguet got off to a good start with four straight birdies after shooting par on the first and second hole. He was four-under at the mid-way point and owned a one-stroke lead in the tournament over Scott County’s Tom Sargent. He had birdies on the 15th and 17th holes, but ran into trouble on the 13th and 16th when he had bogies to finish at an even par on the back nine.
Cody Ellis finished with a five-over par 77. Ellis had birdies on the first and third holes and again on 17, a par 5 hole. But, five bogies and a double-bogy on 16th kept him out of the leader hunt. He finished 22nd on the day.
Alex Davis ended the day with a 79. He was even after nine, but had trouble on the back nine, shooting six-over par and finished 29th in the tournament.
Henry Moore and Luke Cooney tied with a par of 83’s and tied for 49th out of the 76 golfers. Moore shot a 39 on the front-nine, but had a 44 for the back nine. Cooney, who had two birdies for the day finished with a 40 on the first nine holes and a 43 on the back nine.
Corbin will be at the Campbellsville Country Club Saturday for the annual Taylor County Invitational Tournament. They will follow that with a trip to Louisville to play in the prestigious Kentucky Invitational hosted by Sr. Xavier.
