HOUNDS SPLIT
The Corbin Redhounds edged the Warriors of West Oak High School, 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh to win their second game in the Hilton Head Invitational Tuesday, but lost to Blessed Trinity of Roswell, Ga., 14-2 in five innings Wednesday morning. With a 2-1 record the Redhounds will finish second in the pool behind Blessed Trinity.
In Tuesday’s win over West Oak, the Redhounds fell behind 2-0, but scored a run in the bottom of the first when Josh Coppock led off with a double then scored on a Trace Vorbeck sacrifice to center field. The Warriors scored a run in the top of the second for a 3-1 lead, but again the Redhounds answered. Cody Duncum and Drew Farley scored to even the game at 3-3.
Corbin took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Vinnie Hoover led off with a single past the shortstop. He stole second then moved to third on a passed ball. Vorbeck drove in Hoover with a double to right field. West Oak tied the game in the top of the sixth only to see Duncum reach base on a walk and scored on a single by Coppock.
The Warriors tied the game one last time in the top of the seventh, but Corbin came away with the win in the home half of the seventh when Ben House reached base on an infield error. He went to second on a hit and run by Brady Foley. West Oak intentionally walked Duncum with one out. Farley laid down a perfect bunt to score House for the win.
Georgia Tech signee Alex Cruz limited the Redhounds to two hits in Wednesday’s loss to the Titans of Blessed Trinity as the Redhounds fell, 14-2 in five innings.
Corbin scored in the bottom of the second when Travis Smith led off with a walk. Duncum followed with a walk before Foley hit a single to load the bases. Ben Jones hit a sacrifice to second as Smith scored on the play.
Down 8-1 in the bottom of the third, the Redhounds scored one in the inning. House hit into an error at second with one out and Vorbeck followed with a double. The runners held at second and third. Smith followed with a sacrifice to short as House scored.
Trinity, a Catholic school from Georgia, blew the game open with six runs in the top of the fourth. Matt Pelt, a Georgia Southern signee, had a three-run triple in the inning.
