‘Hounds on right track
The football Redhounds of 2005 continued down the winding road of a season that began all up hill. It seems the young Redhounds have righted their ship, however, just in time for district play. The ‘Hounds offense continues to improve behind Clint Cashen, Eric Blackwood, Blake Freeman, Ryan Tate and company.
The ‘Hounds running game seems to bog down at times, but the balance they have with Chasen throwing the football keep the ‘Hounds productive in the points score department. The defense could stand to batten down the hatch a bit, Having Josh Martin back will certainly help, and Lucas Henson played extremely well Friday night, Three wins in a row seems to have shifted the momentum at just the right time, and that is what it is all about, peaking at the right time.
•I understand this week that Superintendents across the state will vote on dividing the state basketball programs between private and public schools. This would affect Districts, Region and the state tournament as we have known them in the past.
As everyone knows, I resist change at every avenue, but particularly in this situation, where the only reason this proposal is being voted on, is because public schools in Lexington and Louisville are finding it difficult to compete with Lexington Catholic, Louisville St. Xavier, Trinity and a few others out in the state. I am aware of all the ramifications as far as recruiting goes, but, trust me, these pubic schools have done their share in the past, and these pub;ic schools were not at all concerned when they were pounding smaller private schools in the past, only now the shoe is on the other foot.
•The Lynn Camp Wildcats roared to their seventh consecutive win by blasting Cumberland 49-7 behind more sensational play by Jimmy Chaffin.
It should be a great game in Somerset Friday night between the Briar Jumpers and Lynn Camp. The Wildcats have played very well to this point in the season, but a win over Somerset would be a signature win, one that would certainly validate the Lynn Camp football program.
•I was talking with Martin Earl Pennington at lunch last week and I couldn’t help but think of all the tight ends who have played at Corbin High School and went on to play at the University of Kentucky; Vin Hoover, David Chandler, Dan Chase, Corey Reeves, all would join Martin Earl among the best tight ends to play at UK. Martin was perhaps the strongest player at the University of Kentucky during his tenure.
•I played golf last week with Eric Jones, his dad, Denny, Gerald Foley and John Jones and it was during the back nine when Eric knocked in an eagle from around 200 yards out and shot 42 on the back nine from the white tees, Not too shabby when you take note that Eric is only 12 years old.
I told Eric about two weeks ago to throw away his golf clubs and baseball hat since I feel very strongly about his future as a basketball player. I guess maybe he should hang onto his clubs a little longer.
•I sure do miss seeing the guys that would fill up the amen corner of the visitors section at Campbell Field. It is not the same if Eddie and Evelyn Poynter, and Baltimore Ramsey, and Henry Rogers and Luke Willis and the Cummins brothers, Ruben and Alvin are not there. We really miss you guys, and I hope you are all well. These people are fans with roots like Henry Martin, Winston Phipps and Jack Coffey.
•There was a poll taken recently that indicated that the public felt the new convention center should not allow high school activities to be held in the complex. I believe there were only about 300 and some who responded to the poll and the response was about two to one against that particular usage of the convention center.
I personally feel that in a day and time when we are emptying out gyms between games in our district and regional basketball tournaments and turning fans away from games they wait all season to see, that a facility that could solve that problem would be not only acceptable but desired.
