The Corbin Redhounds limited the Barbourville Tigers to one offensive rebound and held the high scoring 51st District runners-up to 43 points. The Redhounds picked up the 59-43 win to advance to the 13th Region semifinals Saturday afternoon.
It was Barbourville getting off to the better start as the Tigers ran out to a 15-7 lead over the jittery Redhounds. Corbin hit just 3-of-12 shots in the opening period, one a 3-pointer by senior Matthew Taylor. Taylor and junior Travis Smith accounted for the seven first quarter points by the Redhounds.
However, from that point on it was all Corbin as the Redhounds outscored the Tigers (22-7) by a 52-28 count.
The Redhounds used a 2-2-1 press to cause the Tigers havoc on the defensive end while Smith and Kyle West got Corbin back in the game with eight straight free throws. After Smith tied the score with pair of free throws at the 5:28 mark, Garrett Vaughn hit a 3-pointer for the Tigers and they held on to the lead until Smith went to the inside for back-to-back baskets, pushing the Redhounds ahead, 21-20.
Steven Rudd briefly put the Tigers back ahead, but a 3-pointer by Taylor Jones gave Corbin a 24-22 lead. Barbourville did tie the game at the half on a pair of Josh Hildebrand free throws.
The Redhounds (23-6) scored the first seven points of the third quarter and never looked back. Smith, Hunter Sizemore, Jones and Brody Freeman accounted for the seven unanswered points.
Corbin led 44-38 at the end of three then outscored Barbourville 15-5 in the final eight minutes to finish off the Tigers.
MVP Smith finished the game with a double-double, scoring 17 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Taylor added 18 points while Freeman finished in twin digits with 11 points.
The Redhounds won the battle of the boards, 42-24. They blitzed the nets for 13-of-23 in the second half for 56.5 percent from the field.
