Hounds ground Eagles, Franklin Flyers up next
After two years of being eliminated from the playoffs by Johnson Central, the Corbin Redhounds (13-0) finally got their revenge Friday, defeating the Golden Eagles 35-21 to advance to this year’s state championship semifinals.
Last week’s third round contest was the most competitive that the Hounds have faced since the end of September, with Johnson Central being the first team to put points on the board against Corbin in seven games, but at the end of the night the home crowd at Campbell Field was once again sent home happy after a big win for Big Red.
Senior running back Cameron Combs rushed for 128 yards and two scores on the night, while sophomore quarterback Kade Elam threw for 120 yards and three TDs – two to senior receiver Brody Wells and one to junior Carter Stewart.
Senior Israel Summers and the Redhound defense made stops when necessary, with Summers sacking Johnson Central’s quarterback on two separate occasions.
Corbin is now setting their sights on a rematch with the Franklin County Flyers (8-5) this week in the state tournament semifinals. The Flyers handed Warren East their first loss of the season in round three to earn their spot in the semis.
The Redhounds walked away victorious from the previous meeting between these two squads, traveling to Franklin County back on September 2 and winning, 40-20.
The winner of this rematch, which will be contested at Campbell Field this Friday, Nov. 25, will advance to the 2022 KHSAA Class 4A state championship finals on Friday, Dec. 2, at Kroger Field in Lexington.
Should Corbin find themselves in the state championship game, they will face either the Boyle County Rebels, led by former Redhound head coach Justin Haddix, or Louisville Central, who the Hounds lost to in their last state championship appearance in 2018.
