Hounds edge Tates Creek
The Corbin Redhounds will not get much time to celebrate their victory over the Lexington Tates Creek Commodores Friday night, 21-14, because the Danville Admirals are coming to town.
The Redhounds (1-2) scored late in the game and their defense came up with a key fourth-down stop of the Commodores before they could claim victory. A 15-yard touchdown by senior Brady Foley with 7:15 left in the game proved to be the winning TD.
However, it took a strong start by the Redhounds in the first half to take a 14-0 lead into the halftime break. Corbin scored early in the opening quarter when senior quarterback Ty Cobb marched his team down the field for the first score of the night. The 11-play drive started at the Redhounds 46-yard line and ended with Foley scoring from nine yards out to put Corbin on top, 6-0. Cai Jackson added the point after touchdown.
The Redhounds had a chance to go up two touchdowns in the quarter, but a Cobb pass was picked off.
Cobb ended the second quarter with a touchdown strike to junior Hunter Grubb on a 26-yard pass, giving the Redhounds a 14-0 lead after Jackson tacked on the PAT.
The Redhounds’ defense came up with a couple of big plays in the first half, once stopping the Commodores at the Corbin nine-yard line.
Tates Creek running back Dennis Oxendine came in a big threat to score from anywhere on the field at anytime. The Redhounds stopped the big back in the first half, but the second 24 minutes was a different story. Oxendine led the Commodores down the field on the opening drive then took the ball the final 18 yards for the score. After Jake Ryan added the PAT with 6:56 left in the third quarter, the Commodores were ready for a fight.
Oxendine brought the fans to their feet in the early in fourth quarter when he broke loose for an 80-yard run, pulling his team within a point at the 10:26 mark. Coach Mike Harmon elected to go for the tie and Ryan knotted the game at 14-14.
The Redhounds showed plenty of determination on their ensuing possession. Senior Derek Mahan picked up the kick-off at the Corbin 31-yard line as Foley and Matt Jewell took over. They drove the ball down the first with Foley breaking loose for a 15-yard run to push the Redhounds back on top. Jackson’s kick with 7:15 gave the host a 21-14 lead over the big 6A foe.
The defense answered the challenge and held the Commodores out of the red zone on their bid to tie the game.
Foley led the offense with 159 yards on 22 carries while Jewell added 65 yards on 14 carries.
Corbin will now turn its attention to another team full of speed in the backfield. The Danville Admirals with quarterback Devonta Alcorn will come to Campbell Field with a 2-1 record after getting whipped by cross-town rival, Boyle County 49-16.
Along with Alcorn will be running backs Devin Furlow, Jadarious Brown and Marcus Brown.
Danville opened the season with a 42-0 win over Lincoln County followed by a 22-14 victory over Garrard County.
