HORRIBLE ENDING

Corbin pitcher Hannah Hart and shortstop Kelly Farley collide in the loss to North Laurel.
It wasn’t the way he wanted his team to go out. Corbin had played the 10th ranked North Laurel Lady Jaguars on May 11th to one-run (2-1). But, in the opening of the 13th Region Softball Tournament at South Laurel Monday, the Lady Jaguars broke open the floodgates early and rolled past the Lady Redhounds, 12-0 in five innings.
“North Laurel hit the ball really well. You’ve got to give them credit. They hit the ball no matter where it was at in the zone. They were able to drive it, they hit it into the gaps and just out hit us today.” Corbin Coach Chris Hart said.
Most of the runs came in the bottom of the third when North Laurel scored 10 runs after the first two outs were recorded. The Lady Redhounds’ defense got Kailin Yantz and Kristen Fields to start the bottom half of the third inning. But, after consecutive hits by Megan Baldwin and Emily Sears the defense began to unravel for Corbin.
An error by shortstop Sarah Woolums allowed Baldwin to score. North Laurel went on to send nine batters to the plate as a total of 10 runners crossed the plate for a 12-0 lead.
The big hits saw eighth grader Mikayla Vires hit a two-run double and senior Emily Sears a two-run double.
“It would have been nice if we could have gotten that out and got out of the inning, but I am not sure if we would have delayed it another inning or not because the way they were hitting they were definitely the better team today. No question about it,” Hart said.
“You hope you catch a team like them on a down note, but today we caught them on a good day,” he added.
Corbin (20-16) had a chance to score in the top of the fourth when Woolums hit a single up the middle. Callie Schoolcraft followed with a fielder’s choice and Katie Bernardo hit into an error before Corbin ended the inning with a fly out to right field.
The Lady Redhounds left two runners in the top of the fifth. Lindsay Barton hit a two-out single and Bethany Hensley was hit by a pitch. A grounder by Hannah Helm ended the game.
“I want to compliment my team for what a great job they have done this year,” Hart said. “They had 20 wins, made it to the region tournament and we have a team that is so young with only two seniors. I am extremely proud of them.”
