Homeowner holds intruder at gunpoint until sheriff’s deputies arrive

Gabrielle Malay was held at gunpoint early Sunday morning after allegedly trying to break into a home, according to the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department.
A Bacon Creek Road homeowner held a female intruder at gunpoint until police arrived early Sunday morning.
About 12:30 a.m., officers from the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department with the assistance of three Corbin police officers responded to the residence where Gabrielle Malay had unlawfully entered the residence through a window, Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell said in a release.
Malay also matched the description of a woman, who abandoned a Kubota UTV after being approached by persons near the old Woodbine school, according to the release.
“The woman walked away, and the UTV left behind was determined to have been stolen from the same Bacon Creek Road residence days prior to the burglary,” Harrell wrote.
Deputy Brian Hensley had been investigating the Kubota theft, and Malay became a suspect in a separate auto theft investigation, which is being led by Deputy Joe Prewitt, the release stated.
A vehicle stolen from Carter Street in the Woodbine community was found abandoned in a parking lot at Corbin’s Exit 25.
Hensley arrested Malay, 22, of Farmer’s Trail in the Corinth community, charging her with theft by unlawful taking over $500 in connection with the UTV theft, second-degree burglary and third-degree criminal mischief.
Prewitt charged Malay with theft by unlawful taking of an automobile over $10,000.
“We hope this arrest provides some comfort to residents,” Harrell said. “Assistance from the public and vigilant neighbors looking out for one another contributed to this arrest.”
Hensley and Prewitt are continuing their investigations and can be contacted by calling Whitley County E911 at (606) 549-6017 after regular business hours, or by calling the sheriff’s department during regular business hours at (606) 549-6006.
Deputy Jonas Saunders assisted with the investigation Sunday morning.
