Holiday Tournaments
Holiday basketball tournaments will begin early next week. The annual Cumberland Falls Invitational has been moved up and will be held Dec. 19-22. Action will get underway Monday with two games.
The Jackson County Generals will take on Evangel Christian of Shreveport, Louisiana. The Eagles are coached by Tyler Clark. This is the first visit to Corbin for the Eagles.
The second game Monday night will see host, Corbin, taking on Blue Ride, SC at 8:15 p.m. The Fighting Tigers were 1-4 as of Monday, starting the season 0-4 before beating Travelers Rest, 59-44.
They are led by Tyquan Lyles, Jaman Whitson and Derek Howard and coached by Glenn Reese.
The tournament will continue Tuesday with Williamsburg taking on Robert E. Lee High School of Alabama. As of press time, the Huntsville team was 3-3 and averaging better than 65 points per game.
The final first-round game will find defending champion, Scott County, taking on Pontotoc, Mississippi. The Warriors played in the 2009 Cumberland Falls Invitational. Scott County won the tournament last year defeating Corbin in the championship game, 85-47.
The Cardinals will once again be one of the favorites to win the tournament. They opened the season with a loss to Ballard before beating the Australian Travel Team, 81-40. The Cardinals lost at home to Louisville Trinity, 90-77, then beat Pulaski County 81-72 Saturday night.
Scott County, coached by former Corbin coach Billy Hicks, will be at Hazard and Perry Central this weekend before playing in the Cumberland Falls Invitational.
Colonels at Bardstown
The Whitley County Colonels will travel to Bardstown Monday where they will play in the Bethlehem Holiday Classic. The Colonels are without a win after losing to Anderson County 61-50 in the Maui Classic Saturday. They will take on the Frankfort Panthers Monday at 7:30. The Panthers are 2-3 as of Monday. They have wins over Berea and Lexington Sayre while losing to Paris, Woodford County and Western Hills.
Tuesday the Colonels will play host Bethlehem. They Eagles are 2-1 with wins over Hart County and Nelson County. The lone loss came to Bullitt Central, the fourth team in the tournament.
Whitley County will meet the Cougars Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Cougars are currently 4-2 on the season. Bullitt Central beat Bethlehem, Louisville Holy Cross, North Bullitt and Waggener after starting the season with back-to-back losses to North Oldham and Bullitt East.
Bowman Classic opens Thursday
The Lynn Camp Wildcats will host the Bowman Classic this week. They will play Owsley County Thursday at 7 p.m., Harlan Friday at 7 p.m. and Jellico Saturday at 8:30 p.m.
On the girls’ side of the ledger, Corbin will play in the Bullitt East Invitational, Dec. 21-23 while Whitley County will head to the Boone County Tournament, Tuesday-Thursday (Dec. 20-22). Williamsburg will play in the Bowman Classic hosted by the Lynn Camp Lady ‘Cats, Dec. 17-19.
Williamsburg will take on Jackson County and Jellico, Saturday followed by Pineville, Sunday at 1:30. They will play Lynn Camp Monday, Dec. 19 at 7:45 p.m.
