HISTORY IS MADE
Some boys and girls boarded the bus to Lexington Sunday to make history for Corbin High School. After lacing up their shoes, they didn’t step on a field or a court. The Redhounds stepped onto the Joyland Bowling Lanes for the first-ever high school bowling contest against Bourbon County.
Coach Kenny Kysar, an All-American baseball player at Union College and former Redhound, is the first boy’s coach and Will Sanderson, a Union College bowler will head up the Lady Redhounds.
Both teams opened the season with a 4-3 loss to the Bourbon County Colonels, who has had a club sport for several years.
“I was tremendously proud of my kids,” Kysar said. “They come out in their first match of their bowling career against Bourbon County on the road. It was exciting and emotions were flying everywhere.”
“The kids were extremely excited about getting ready and getting this season kicked off,” Kysar said. “We had a lot of fun and I was really proud of my kids. They bowled their hearts out and were consistent across the board. I couldn’t be more pleased for what they did.”
Corbin fell behind 3-1 s in the regular games, but picked up two points in the Baker’s Games. A regular game consists of four bowlers going against the opposing school. At the conclusion of the match, the lowest score is eliminated and the team with the most points is given one point. Teams roll two games for a total of four points.
There are two sets of four with eight bowlers total.
“After the regular games we were down then we had to switch over to the Baker’s game,” Kysar said. “It is a completely different mind set for the kids.”
“At any point when we started switching lanes for the Baker’s Games, they could have bowed down and gave up, but they came up big in that first Baker’s Game and put the momentum back on our side. We were down 3-2 after the first Baker’s Game,” Kysar said.
“It was close throughout the entire game,” Kysar said. “The Baker’s Game is what turned it around for us.”
In the Baker’s Dozen, there are five bowlers per school with each player rolling a different game. Marcus Kuhl. Keaton Burton, Chad Brown, Brandon Nantz and Josh Giles participated in the match for the Redhounds.
“Our most consistent bowler of the night was Brandon Nantz with a 155 and a 151,” Kysar said. “Nathan dropped in the high for the night with a 165. Keaton Burton did a great job and I can’t say enough about Giles, he came up huge in the Baker’s Game. His performance was solid as well.”
“Across the board all of my eight guys that bowled games, did really well,” he said.
One Corbin team was made up of Kuhl, Nantz, Kenny Skinner and Giles while the other was Keaton Burton, Brown, Nantz and Kenton Frederick.
Because of the 3-3 tie, total pins for the day was added, declaring Bourbon County the winner. The Colonels had 2221 pins to Corbin’s 2079.
The Redhounds will be at home Saturday when they take on Lee County at 2 p.m. at Forest Lanes. “Lee County is in our region and it will be our home opener,” Kysar said. “We are really excited and a lot of the kids are spreading the word and trying to get as many people out to support us in our home opener. It will be a lot of fun. I don’t know anything about Lee County.”
The KHSAA sent out a proposed alignment, which is scheduled to be voted on January 25 at the Board of Control meeting in Lexington.
