High water forces Whitley schools to dismiss early
The Whitley County School system will dismiss about an hour early today because of high water on some roads in the county caused by heavy, steady rains.
Whitley County School Superintendent Scott Paul said most of the district’s school release at about five minutes until 3:00 p.m. each day. Busses will leave the central campus today to take students home at around 2:00 p.m. — later at some outlying schools.
"Normally, when we start having a problem it is the smaller streams that are close to the roadways," said Whitley County School Superintendent Scott Paul. "That’s the situation today. It’s supposed to recede fairly quickly once the rain stops so we should be in session Wednesday."
Paul said the school district’s Director of Transportation, T.O. Elliott, has monitored the situation with county roads all day Tuesday and made the recommendation to call school off early.
