High School Round-Up
The Bell County Bobcats did the little things like hitting their free throws down the stretch and taking care of the basketball. The result was a 57-51 win over the Corbin Redhounds Tuesday night.
The Redhounds, just off a pair of wins over Middlesboro and Whitley County, came out firing but was unable to hold off the host team in the second half.
The Redhounds (6-7) jumped on the Bobcats for a 6-0 lead and led at the first stop 13-10.
With the pace of the game in Bell County’s favor the Redhounds were still able to hang onto the lead throughout the second period and led at the half, 25-21.
However, it was the Bobcats who came out of the locker room firing in the third period as senior guard Larry Helton hit a three pointer and sophomore Ryan Whitaker went inside for a basket that enable the Bobcats to take a 26-25 lead.
Corbin quickly regain the lead on a basket by Cody Dixon, but it was short-lived as Jeremy Sanders put the Bobcats ahead, 29-27.
The lead changed hands several times before the Bobcats moved ahead at the third stop, 40-38.
Bell County (8-5) pushed out to their biggest lead of the game at 47-38.
But, the Redhounds refused to quit and closed the gap to four (47-43) on a three pointer by Jordan Noble and a lay-up by Josh Hamlin.
The ‘Hounds would get no closer as Bell County pushed its lead back out to nine before winning the game by six points.
Corbin will take on the Evarts Wildcats Friday night in a doubleheader with the Lady ‘Hounds. Gametime for the boys will be 6 p.m.
Lynn Camp Edges Wildcats
The Lynn Camp Wildcats are on a roll. The Wildcats, under second-year coach Anthony Pennington, won their ninth game in succession after holding off a stubborn team of Wildcats at Evarts High School Monday night, 79-74.
After opening the season with three losses, the Wildcats have put together an impressive string of wins while averaging 89.2 points per game. Their last defeat came at the hands of district-rival, Barbourville, 73-56.
Their next big tests comes Friday night when they travel to Knox Central then again next week when they travel to Knox Central.
The Wildcats (9-3) looked to be on the verge of breaking the game open several times in the opening quarter, once when senior Travis Reeves hit a three pointer for a 13-3 lead then again in the second period when a pair of technical fouls allowed Lynn Camp to hit five of six free throws for a 33-19 score.
Lynn Camp led 43-29 at the half as the scrappy Wildcats stayed close.
Evarts came out strong in the second half and outscored Lynn Camp. 8-2 and pull themselves within a 45-37 score on back to back three point plays. One by Frank Middleton and another by Shawn Hoskins.
The rally saw Evarts cut the Lynn Camp lead to four (50-46) when Middleton sliced his way into the paint for a basket. But Reeves answered with back to back shots, including a three pointer for a 55-46 score.
Lynn Camp led at the end of three quarters 61-51 when Chris Eggen notched a long shot from beyond the arc.
The Wildcats expanded their lead to 12 points (70-58) when Adam Bray hit two free throws with 5:36 left in the game. The host closed out the game with a 16-9 run and pulled within two (76-74) before Chris Smith hit a basket in the lane and Bray added a free throw to put the game away.
Pennington said his team was on a roll and needed this wake-up call. “We really haven’t had that wake-up call and tonight was that wake-up call and proved we can fight adversities too.”
“When we’re not hitting our free throws which good basketball teams have to do, when you’re not doing that you can’t win basketball games. You’ve got to be able to hit your free throws,” said Pennington.
Lynn Camp had a chance to put the game away from the line where they hit 18 of 35 from the charity stripe. Evarts was 12 of 16 in their come back bid.
“I think our pressure worked early on,” said Pennington. “I don’t think it looked as good as it has been in the past but a lot of that is because of the lack of practice time.”
“Going into the Monticello game this was a good wake-up call,” he added. “It was a good win for us, on the road and it showed us what we need to work on to get better.”
The Wildcats were led by Reeves with 20 points while Evarts’ Middleton led all scorers with 25 points.
Three other Lynn Camp players were in double figures with Bray tossing in 19 points, Eggen 18 points and Smith 17 points.
