Harvey Alder announces write-in candidacy for sheriff
The race for Whitley County Sheriff just got a little more interesting as another write-in candidate has joined the fray.
Harvey Alder announced earlier this week that he will be seeking the office of Whitley County Sheriff, joining William “Bill” Elliotte and fellow write-in candidate Jim Walden.
“I have lived in Williamsburg for over 30 years,” Alder said. “I am a former president of the Williamsburg Chamber of Commerce, and a former president of the Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce. I have owned several local businesses, worked at the Whitley County Detention Center, 911 dispatch, and I am currently employed as the supervisor of court security for the sheriff’s department.”
Alder also mentioned that he is a member of the Whitley County Cattleman’s Association, and he serves on the board of directors for the Williamsburg-Whitley County Airport.
In his personal life, Alder is a father of an 11-year-old son who enjoys hunting, fishing, farming and sports. He is a member of Cumberland Freewill Baptist Church, and he is currently enrolled at the University of the Cumberlands where he is pursuing a degree in criminal justice.
Alder said that he hopes to pick up votes from citizens who were supporting the other candidates during the primary race earlier this year. He says that he has been reaching out to people mainly through social media and personal contacts, but he does plan on getting out into the community during the weekends leading up to the general election on Nov. 8.
As for what he plans to do as sheriff should he win, Alder said, “I am just a regular guy who wants to help the citizens of Whitley County. I would like to arrange for property taxes to be paid online, and I would also like to make accident reports available online as well. I would put experienced deputies on patrol in our community so that they could respond to situations in a timely manner.”
In order to vote for a write-in candidate on Election Day, voters will need to fill in the “write-in” box and write the name of the candidate they are voting for on the line next to the box.
