HALCOMB STEPS DOWN
In a surprising move to the local softball community, Whitley County Coach David Halcomb turned in his resignation as coach of the Lady Colonels Monday.
Halcomb began coaching in 2002 when he led the Lady Colonels to their best finish in his 10 years with a 20-4 record and a trip to the 13th Region finals. He leaves Whitley County with a 168-144 record and five appearances in the 13th Region Softball Tournament.
“I know it’s not outstanding, but good considering that I always played tough schedules outside of southeastern Kentucky. I’m pretty pleased with that record actually,” Halcomb said.
“It has been a great run for me as the softball coach at Whitley County High School for the last 10 years,” Halcomb said Tuesday afternoon. “I am proud of what our team has been able to accomplish during this time. I have tried to run a program with a lot of character and integrity, to teach the girls the fundamentals of the game and to make it fun for them.”
“Even though it is difficult to move on, I just believe the timing is right for me to step down,” Halcomb said. “I just want to free up more of my time in the spring to be with my wife and son, and to become more focused on his athletic endeavors.”
“God has blessed me by giving me the opportunity to make a difference in my student-athletes’ lives – and I have tried my best to instruct my players about how to become good, upstanding citizens and hopefully to have been a positive influence on them.”
“I will miss the friendships I have made with other softball coaches across the state and with my own coaching staff,” he added.
“I wish the best of luck to our Lady Colonel Softball program as I am confident it will continue to thrive next season and in future years as well,” Halcomb said.
Halcomb also coaches the Whitley County volleyball, which he plans to stay with in the coming years.
