Gray man charged with attempted murder

A Gray man has been charged with attempted murder following a New Year’s Eve domestic dispute at his residence where he allegedly fired a gun near his wife.

Brent Hensley is charged with attempted murder in connection with a New Year’s Eve incident.

Brent Allen Hensley, 23, is being held in the Knox County Detention Center in lieu of a $100,000 cash bond after being charged with attempted murder-domestic violence, first-degree wanton endangerment, fourth-degree assault-domestic violence, third-degree assault of a police officer, resisting arrest, menacing, and second-degree criminal mischief.

About 10:26 p.m., Knox County Sheriff’s Deputies Mikey Ashurst and Hunter Luttrell responded to a call at an Emanuel Hollow Road residence in regards to a woman hiding in a bedroom of the home with her four children whose husband was allegedly intoxicated and firing a handgun inside the residence, according to a Knox County Sheriff’s Department release.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they loudly identified themselves and gave commands for those inside to come to the door. Henley’s wife opened the door coming onto the porch of the home and had been noticeably crying.

Brent Hensley refused to exit the residence after being told to do so by deputies and would only show one of his hands but not the other, the release stated.

Ashurst made his way to the porch and Hensley finally came out of the home. Deputies then placed Hensley on the ground and he was detained, but became belligerent and non-complaint when told he was under arrested, according to the release.

“While Deputy Luttrell was attempting to control Hensley for detainment, he kick the deputy causing them both to fall onto the porch,” the release stated.

Hensley’s wife told deputies that he had been assaulting her since earlier in the evening and took her phone and keys. She also told police that she was ignoring her husband attempting to get her children to sleep but that he was drunk and possibly on drugs, according to the release.

Hensley’s wife also told police that he looked at her and said he would blow her brains out, and pulled out a pink .380 caliber handgun.

“She stated that she jerked away as she was holding her baby on the couch when Brent Hensley discharged the handgun shooting through the window behind her head. Her three other children were in the immediate vicinity as well,” the release stated.

Deputies found a spent shell casing on the floor inside the residence. Hensley’s wife also told police that her husband told her that if she attempted to call the police, he would kill whoever showed up adding that he was holding a loaded 410 shotgun when deputies approached the front door, according to the release.

Ashurst observed visible bruising to the face, forehead, arms and stomach of Hensley’s wife.

Hensley is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Knox District Court.
