Girls’ teams pick up needed wins over the weekend
The Corbin Lady Redhounds improved to 2-1 on the season Saturday with a 66-47 victory over Letcher County Central in the 12th vs 13th Region Challenge at South Laurel High School.
Kallie Housley led the way for the Lady Redhounds with 18 points Shelby Stewart added 15 and Darcie Anderson had 12.
We played well,” said Coach Isaac Wilson. “We were sluggish in the first quarter, but we were able to turn it around and do a lot of good things.”
Corbin will start a five game homestand on Thursday when the Lady Redhounds host Lynn Camp.
On Friday, Corbin will open 50th District play against Williamsburg.
“I just ask them to continue to challenge themselves,” Wilson said of his team. “We are nowhere near the team we would like to be.”
Monday, the Lady Redhounds will face Leslie County in the opening game of the Lady Redhound Christmas Bash.
They will face undetermined opponents on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Other teams competing in the tournament include: Bell County, Danville, Grant County, Harlan County, Jackson County and Somerset.
“We are looking forward to hosting again,” Wilson said noting this is the second time the tournament has been held. “It should be a good tournament.”
The Williamsburg Lady Jackets picked up their first win of the season last Friday with a 73-49 victory over Jellico in the Wayne Bargo Classic.
Kaylee Graham and Alexis Wilson each had 19 points to lead Williamsburg. Hannah Creekmore added 12 points while Alana Mah pitched in 11.
Reagan White led the Lady Jackets on the boards hauling down 13 rebounds.
Williamsburg will finish up its season-opening four game homestand when it hosts Bluegrass United home school Thursday night.
The Lady Jackets will travel to Corbin Friday night and then head to Barbourville Monday night.
The Whitley County Lady Colonels snapped a two-game losing streak with a 63-43 win over Middlesboro in the 12th v. 13th Region Challenge at South Laurel High School Saturday.
Martina Xirgo led the Lady Colonels with 20 points including hitting four of six three-point shots. Marissa Douglas added 10 points.
Jaylee Cox pulled down 11 rebounds for Whitley County
“They worked really hard in the gym and competed for four quarters today,” said Coach Sean Pigman. “We didn’t seem to have a letup in any quarter. We won every quarter. We were able to change. We were able to play with pace at times and were able to play in the half court at times.”
The Lady Colonels were back home Tuesday night to face Knox Central in a game that had not yet been completed as of press time.
Whitley County will be back on the road Thursday to face Madison Central and then travel to Bath County beginning Monday for the Mike Bromagen Ladycats Legend Tournament.
Whitley County will face Paris at 2:30 p.m. Monday and Lewis County at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
