Girls’ basketball season heats up
The Whitley County Lady Colonels are now 2-1 on the season after defeating Madison Southern Friday and losing to Mercer County Saturday.
“Its been a good start,” said Coach Sean Pigman. “The kids are really buying in and working hard.”
The Lady Colonels defeated Madison Southern at home, 43-41.
Marissa Douglas led the way for Whitley County with 14 points, while Martina Ahumada Xirgo pulled down 11 rebounds.
Nine Lady Colonels got into the scoring column.
“Yes. it is nice to get contributions from so many players,” Pigman said. “Our practices are very competitive as so many of them are trying to earn minutes.”
Whitley County lost at home Saturday to 12th Region opponent Mercer County, 76-56.
Ahumada Xirgo had 13 points to lead the Lady Colonels with Bailey Brown adding 11.
Again, the Lady Colonels got contributions up and down the roster as 10 players scored and nine players pulled down at least one rebound.
“My kids are getting better and believing more in each other,” Pigman said. “They have been doing a great job of three things we ask of them. Being great teammates, having great attitudes and giving great effort. I am lucky to be surrounded by such a great staff and great kids.”
Whitley County opened the season last Tuesday with a 56-47 win at home over Clay County.
Douglas scored 14 points for the Lady Colonels with Taylor Rice adding 10.
Nine players scored for the Lady Colonels with 10 players hauling in at least one of the team’s 33 rebounds.
Whitley County was scheduled to travel to Harlan County Tuesday night for a game that had not yet been completed as of press time.
The Lady Colonels will be back on the road Saturday at South Laurel to face Middlesboro int the 12th vs 13th Region Challenge. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
Pigman said facing Middlesboro presents a challenge as the Lady Jackets have one of the leading scorers in the 13th Region in Kailey Owens.
Whitley County will return home on Tuesday to face Knox Central.
Williamsburg Lady Jackets
The Williamsburg Lady Jackets opened their season at home Thursday with a 56-47 loss to Barbourville.
Alexis Wilson led Williamsburg with 18 points, including six of six from the free throw line.
Kaylee Graham added 11 points.
Lorelei Coleman grabbed 14 rebounds for the Lady Jackets.
“It was a tough loss to start the year, but we were able to learn a lot from the game,” said Coach Randy Crider. “Hopefully, moving forward we can use many aspects and things that happened in this game to help us improve in the future.”
Williamsburg was scheduled to host Pineville Tuesday night.
The game had not yet been completed as of press time Tuesday.
The second half of what was scheduled to be a home and home series against the Lady Lions Thursday night has been cancelled.
The Lady Jackets will be back on the floor Friday night to host Jellico in the Wayne Bargo Classic. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
“Jellico’s game is going to be just like every other game. We are looking to improve and get better,” Crider said.
“Also on Friday is the first set of games in the Bargo Classic where we are honoring longtime basketball manager Wayne Bargo,” Crider said. “He does so much for the basketball programs at Williamsburg and on Saturday night before the boys play at 6 p.m. Wayne will be honored.”
Corbin Lady Redhounds
The Corbin Lady Redhounds picked up their first win Friday night with a 53-40 victory at home against Southwestern.
Shelby Stewart led the way with a double-double, scoring 26 points and hauling in 10 rebounds.
Kallie Housley added 13 points.
Corbin was coming off of a 73-70 loss in the season opener at Pulaski County on Nov. 29.
Darcie Anderson led the way with 19 points, hitting four of six three-point shots. Housley had 16 points and Bailey Stewart knocked down 12.
The Lady Redhounds will be back on the road Saturday at South Laurel to face Letcher County Central in the 12th vs. 13th Region Challenge.
Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
