G&E Burgers celebrating 50 years
What may be Williamsburg’s oldest restaurant is celebrating a milestone this week.
G&E Burgers is celebrating its 50th anniversary this week with 50 percent off on selected items, live music Friday and Saturday, and other festivities.
“It is a landmark here in Williamsburg,” noted Julie McCullah, who has owned the property since 1997 and took over management of it in 2010. “We just want to let everyone know it is 50 years old.”
McCullah noted that there are many customers, who will tell her that G&E was their first job or was the location of their first date, which is always a delight to hear.
The restaurant will serve fresh cooked pork all week long as part of its celebration.
There will be some kind of discount every day of this week.
On Friday and Saturday, there will be live music starting at 6 p.m.
The restaurant will also have Wheel or Deal this week, which will be similar to Wheel of Fortune as customers spin the wheel to find out if they have won any free or discounted items, such as 50 percent off a burger or appetizer, free French fries or a free drink.
In addition, the restaurant will have “decade days” where it will be playing music from a different decade every day, and those dressed in clothes from that decade will receive 10 percent off.
G&E advertises itself as having the “best burgers in town,” which are hand patted and made fresh from never frozen hamburger meat.
Originally a drive-in restaurant, G&E has made some changes in recent years.
It now features outside seating by the river.
In 2017, the restaurant added eat-in seating and began serving alcohol.
So what is the secret to staying in business for half a century?
“I think you have to give people what they want, treat customers well and have good food of course,” McCullah noted adding that she can only claim responsibility for the last 10 years or so of the restaurant’s success.
McCullah added that she hopes people, who haven’t eaten at the restaurant in a while or who have never been there, will come by this week, and enjoy the celebration.
