GAME DAY – 10-30-09
CORBIN AT LEXINGTON CHRISTIAN
When: 7:30 p.m., Friday
Records: Corbin (8-1), Lexington Christian (8-1)
Coaches: Paul Rains (LC) Steve Jewell (Corbin)
Notes: When you think of Redhound tradition, you tend to think of all the great games won by Corbin over the years. Here is the chance to pull off another. Lexington Christian comes into this game as the Class A’s number one team in the state. A team with a prolific player like Dominque Hayden, who has scored 31 touchdowns and rushed for 1,665 yards on 176 carries. An average of 9.4 yards a carry. He has been mentioned as a Mr. Football candidate.
However, the Eagles are not a one-man team. They have an outstanding quarterback in Lucas Witt. He has thrown 134 passes and hit on 81, including 22 touchdowns to Branden Burdette (9), Sam Duff (4), Hayden (4), Adam Hall (3) along with five others. He has thrown for 1,411 yards.
The Eagles are averaging 47.6 points per game and have allowed 12.8. However, they have not been scored on in five weeks. LCA went through their district schedule outscoring their four opponents, 200-0. Their lone loss came at the hands of Lexington Catholic, 27-26.
The question. Can the Redhounds stop Hayden and company? Another question. Have the Eagles met a team of Corbin’s caliber? A team that has the tradition like the Redhounds.
Corbin has their own Mr. Football candidate in Caleb Watkins who has tallied 28 touchdowns and scored 170 points. The Redhounds may not have the experience at quarterback that LCA does, but they do have tradition and pride.
Jim’s Pick: Corbin 34, Lexington Christian 27.
LYNN CAMP AT McCREARY CENTRAL
When: 7:30 p.m.
Records: McCreary Central (6-3), Lynn Camp (4-5)
Coaches: Clinton Gay (MC), David Mitchell (LC)
Notes: It will be power against power as the Wildcats travel to McCreary Central. The Raiders feature the one-two punch of senior Zach Roark and Aaron Watts while the Wildcats are led on the ground by Wesley Steele and Tyrone Person.
Roark has rushed for 1,083 yards through seven games, scoring 11 touchdowns while Watts has 12 TDs rushing and three return touchdowns.
The Raiders are averaging 29.5 points a game while giving up 28.6. On the other side, Lynn Camp has struggled somewhat this season scoring only 15.6 per game and giving up 29.8. However, 160 of the 269 points came against 5A foes, Clay County (48) and Whitley Co. (55) while #1 ranked Lexington Christian tacked on 57. In the last six games the Wildcats have allowed only 18.1 as their defense has steadily improved.
Jim’s pick: Lynn Camp 30, McCreary Central 26.
WHITLEY COUNTY AT ROCKCASTLE CO.
When: 7:30 p.m.
Records: Rockcastle Co. (4-5), Whitley Co. (5-4)
Coaches: Scott Parkey (RC), Jim Black (WC)
Notes: Can the Colonels come back with another outstanding game after rolling past Perry Central, 63-18? Coach Jim Black’s team was ready for the Commodores last week. It will take another effort like that to beat the Rockets in Mt. Vernon.
The Rockets have struggled at times in 2009, winning only four games, (Wayne Co. 34-0), Lincoln Co. (42-14), Madison Southern (40-12) and McCreary Central (42-14).
Rockcastle County has another horse to ride in the name of Clark Rowe, who has rushed for 1,734 yards and 20 of the 27 touchdowns on the ground. They also have a very capable quarterback in Dustin Bishop who has thrown for 831 yards and 10 touchdowns. His targets are Matt Bullens, Jamie Todd and Rowe.
Whitley County will counter with senior Jamie Lebanion, who runs the option to near perfection. Justin Goins was the benefactor of three touchdown passes last week in the win over Perry Central. On the ground, Whitley County has a stable of Colonels including Josh Wynn, Cody Bramlett, Ale Patrick, Cody Bowlin and Jordan Chute.
Jim’s pick: Whitley Co. 44, Rockcastle Co. 20.
WILLIAMSBURG AT PINEVILLE
When: 7:30 p.m.
Records: Pineville (4-5), Williamsburg (4-5)
Coaches: Bart Elam (P), Jerry Herron (W)
Notes: Did the week off help the Yellow Jackets? Time will tell.
Williamsburg will take their air attack to Pineville where Herron hopes to see the Jackets close out the season and gain some momentum for the playoffs. They will host Ashland Fairview in the opening round.
The Lions have a successful air attack of their own behind Mark Combs who has passed for 1,225 yards and eight TD’s. Running back Cody Hendrickson has 10 TDs on 755 yards.
Williamsburg quarterback Ryan Moses leads 1A with 2,282 yards and 18 touchdown passes. Dusty Brown has eight TDs on 1,016 yards while James Payne and Daniel Pettit have four touchdown catches as well.
Jim’s pick: Williamsburg 32, Pineville 20.
