GAME DAY
It’s Week 5 of the high school football season. Four games are on tap tonight around the county.
Corbin will be at South Laurel. I expect the Redhounds to have a good game but the wet fields may slow down the scoring a bit. Still look for Caleb Watkins, Ryan Fritts and Matthew Taylor to have a good game.
Roman Mitch is showing much improved play at quarterback. He was able to go to Aaron Manns for a couple of big plays last week. It has been something Redhounds fans have been looking for. The more Mitchell and Manns get confidence, the more the offense is going to open up and cause a lot of problems for future opponents.
The Redhounds are high in the latest KHSAA stats released earlier this week. As a team the Redhounds are first in passing defense, giving up an average of 43 yards per game in the first four contests.
Offensively the Hounds are 5th rushing the football. They are averaging 274 yards per game.
Corbin is fourth in scoring at a 35.7 clip and 4th in defense, giving up 12.7 points per game. The are 4th in scoring margin on the plus side with a 23.
Three players are ranked among the top with Watkins third in offense, averaging 157 yards per game. He has 470 yards in the first four games.
Roman Mitchell is 9th in passing, hitting on 13 of 22 for an average of 94 yards per game. Matthew Taylor has caught five passes for 113 yards which ranks him 14th.
Look for the Redhounds to roll pas the Cardinals tonight, 44-14.
Williamsburg will be at Hazard. That’s a tough road for the Yellow Jackets despite its powerful air attack of Ryan Moses to Dusty Brown and Daniel Pettitt. Moses is the top passer in Class A and ranks second statewide. He has 1092 yards passing and eight touchdowns. He is averaging 273 yards per game.
Receivers Dusty Brown and Daniel Pettit are third and fourth in class A as well as the state. Brown has 417 yards while Pettit had 406, so they are running neck and neck.
They will meet another high flying offense in Hazard, so this game may be similar to last week’s loss to Knox Central when the Jackets lost, 48-46.
Look for a high school scoring game with Hazard winning at home, 52-44.
Harlan will be at Lynn Camp. The Wildcats won last week behind the powerful running of senior Wesley Steele. Steele got plenty of help from senior Tyrone Person. Lynn Camp will face a talented team in Harlan.
The Green Dragons are led by Andrew Link, who is at the top of the Class A rushing list. Kenny Pennington and Ben Cornett will be tough to handle as well.
I like the Wildcats’ chances of pulling the upset, 22-19.
Belfry at Whitley County. The Colonels have an opportunity to bounce back against a very solid program in the Belfry Pirates.
They have to cut down on turnovers if they want to win this game. Senior quarterback Jamie Lebanion needs to hit on some passes to open the running game for Cody Bramlett and Alex Patrick. Whitley County should get the win, 27-22.
