Fugitive claims he was working for DEA, but police say no way
A fugitive from Georgia allegedly tried to avoid arrest Monday evening when he was approached by a Williamsburg Police Officer by claiming he was making an undercover drug buy for the Drug Enforcement Agency.
About 7 p.m., Sgt. Jim Poll arrested Darrell Steven Morgan, 39, of 160 Smith Hill Road, Williamsburg, charging him with being a fugitive from another state for a Georgia parole violation. In addition, Pool served him with two arrest warrants for failure to pay fines.
The incident happened at Green Apartments after police got a report about a possible prowler in the area going door to door knocking on doors, said Williamsburg Police Chief Wayne Bird.
When Pool arrived at the apartment complex, he observed Morgan and approached him. As he was approaching, Morgan started whispering to Pool.
"He basically told Jim, ‘I’m glad you’re here. I’m glad you’re here. I am the one, who is working for the DEA. I’m here buying drugs. I’m here buying drugs,’" Bird noted.
Just as Pool is getting ready to check to see if Morgan had any outstanding arrest warrants, Morgan told him that he was wanted out of Georgia, Bird said.
"He wasn’t buying drugs for anybody. I guess he thought maybe he could con a police officer," Bird said.
One of the first requirements police have to use someone as a cooperating source is to make sure they are not a wanted or violent individual, Bird added.
Morgan is wanted out of Floyd County, Ga., for a probation violation stemming from a larceny charge, according to his arrest warrant.
Morgan was lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center.
District Judge Fred White ordered Morgan held without bond due to the fugitive charge.
