Fugitive arrested after attempting to flee from Monday crash in Corbin
Local police say a London man who fled the scene of a two-vehicle accident in north Corbin Monday afternoon is a fugitive from justice in Indiana and is wanted for parole violations in Kentucky.
Joshua B. Sizemore, 27, leaped from a friend’s pickup truck shortly after the crash, which occurred at the intersection of U.S. 25E and Ohler Road at about 10:50 a.m., and hid behind an Advanced Auto Parts store before being apprehended. Police say the driver of the truck, Willie T. Shepherd, 31, of Green Road, KY, was immobilized from the crash and likely suffered head trauma and other injuries. He had to be cut free from the wreckage by members of the Corbin Fire Department and was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center for treatment.
Also hurt was 24-year-old Adam Akin, of Somerset. Akin was driving a Chrysler minivan and was turning onto U.S. 25E when his vehicle was hit in the side. He suffered minor injuries and was taken to Baptist Regional Medical Center for treatment.
According to Corbin Police Officer James Miller, who investigated the crash, speed and disregard for the traffic signal at the intersection was the likely cause. Witnesses reported that Shepherd’s Ford pickup was traveling well above the speed limit and ran through a red light. He was heading west on U.S. 25E toward I-75 Exit 29.
Sizemore was captured by Whitley County Sheriff’s Department Special Deputy Chad Estep, a witness to the wreck.
“We weren’t initially certain who the guy was or why he ran,” Miller said. “He told us so many lies, it was hard to figure everything out.”
Sizemore originally told police his name was Jason Dean Smith and that he ran from the scene of the accident because he was trying to call for help. He was unable to provide any identification card to authorities. After obtaining fingerprints from the police department’s Livescan fingerprinting machine, Sizemore’s true identity was discerned. The likely reason he fled was also learned.
“Pursuant to a criminal background check, Sizemore was revealed to be a fugitive from justice from Ripley, Indiana stemming from charges of possession of methamphetamine precursors, a Class C felony. Sizemore was also charged by probation and parole [officials] for a parole violation in the state of Kentucky relating to a conviction of two counts of robbery in the second degree,” said a Corbin Police Department news release issued Tuesday morning.
Sizemore was arrested and lodged in the Knox County Jail. He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, giving a police officer a false name, violation of parole and for being a fugitive from justice.
Miller said Sizemore misinformed police about where he lives as well.
“He said he didn’t really know anything about his family and where he lives,” Mille said. “It wasn’t true. He’s been living with his mother in London.”
