Friday night wreck shuts down I-75 for hours

Interstate 75 between Corbin and Williamsburg was shut down for several hours Friday night as emergency personnel worked to clear up a wreck involving a tractor-trailer truck and a pickup truck towing a trailer.

Kentucky State Police Division of Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer Chris McQueen said the wreck occurred just before 10 p.m. near the 19-mile marker in the southbound lanes.

The Dodge Ram pickup, driven by 52-year-old Donald W. Ray of Springfield, Ohio, ran off the left shoulder and across the rumble strip causing the trailer to begin swaying and strike the cable barrier.

“Ray lost control of the vehicle and overturned sliding south on its side across both southbound lanes,” McQueen said.

The tractor-trailer driven by 62-year-old Michael G. Layne of Knoxville, Tenn., was in the right lane and unable to avoid the crash, colliding with the truck.

McQueen said the tractor-trailer belonged to XPO Logistics Freight based out of Ann Arbor, Mich. It was going from Cincinnati, Ohio to Newman, Ga. with a load of general freight.

Corbin Police and firefighters, Oak Grove and Woodbine firefighters closed down I-75 at exit 25 detouring traffic onto U.S. 25W and Ky. 26.

Whitley County EMS transported Ray to Baptist Health Corbin for treatment of minor injuries.

Layne was not injured.

Gold Bug firefighters responded to the scene of the crash.

McQueen said the scene was cleared about 1:10 a.m.
