Friday morning crash sends four people to hospital

A grandmother and her two infant grandchildren were in this 2005 Jeep Liberty, which flipped over on US25W after being struck in the side Friday morning. No one was seriously injured.

A Friday morning accident north of Williamsburg sent four people to the hospital, including two young children, but police say the wreck likely would have been a lot worse if everyone hadn’t been properly restrained in their vehicles.

The crash happened about 9:38 a.m. near the intersection of Highway 204 and US25W.

Whitley County Sheriff’s Sgt. Todd Shelley said that Jimilou Steenbergen, 34, was traveling east on Highway 204 in a 2009 Chevy Cobalt when she was unable to stop at the stop signal due to various factors, including slick tires and wet roads.

Steenbergen then struck a 2005 Jeep Liberty in the driver’s side, which was driven by Rosa Davis, 63. Davis vehicle flipped over and landed on its top.

One person was transported to the hospital out of this 2009 Chevy Cobalt.

Davis had her 10-month-old and 21-month-old grandchildren in the vehicle at the time. Both were secured in car seats.

Whitley County EMS transported Davis, her two grandchildren, and Steenbergen to Baptist Health Corbin for treatment.

Shelley said that all things considered, the injuries were relatively minor.

“By the grace of God, everybody was OK,” Shelley noted.

Steenbergen’s passenger, a 12-year-old boy, was not transported to the hospital.

Whitley County Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Lawson and Kentucky State Police Detective Jake Wilson assisted at the scene along with members of the Goldbug Volunteer Fire Department and Whitley County EMS.
