Free Throw Woes
The Whitley County Colonels may have lost a hard fought game against the Jackson County Generals Monday night, but they left the floor with a lot of respect for their defense.
The Colonels threw a full court press on Jackson County that caught the Generals off guard and resulted in 19 turnovers.
Whitley County lost the game 66-50 but a horrid night at the free throw line shot the Colonels in the foot. Whitley County hit only 13 of 33 free throws in a 16-point loss. “That is something the kids have got to work on during the summer,” said Whitley County coach Darrell Guffey. “They need to be in the gym shooting 100 free throws a day.”
However, Guffey was happy with his team’s defense. “I thought we outplayed them in every aspect of the game except maybe rebounding. If we hit some of those free throws we are right in the game, it’s just inexcusable to miss that many free throws.”
“I really thought our press caused them to turn the ball over and we did a good job getting to the basket, we just didn’t hit many free throws,” said Guffey.
It was the Colonels jumping out to a 7-2 lead midway through the quarter behind Jordan McCumbers and Travis Roaden. The two combined for all seven points.
But the Generals came back before the end of the quarter and forced a 9-9 tie when Fox hit a three pointer to end the quarter.
The Generals (12-11) scored the first four points of the second quarter and forced Whitley County to come from behind. Two free throws by freshman Ben Prewitt and a three point play by McCumbers with 4:51 left in the half gave the Colonels a 18-17 lead.
The lead changed hands six times before the Generals went to the half with a 33-28 lead. The Colonels missed six free throws in a three minute span at the close of the quarter that cost them the lead.
Whitley County (5-15) started the third quarter fast when Roaden picked off a pass and went in for a lay-up. Calvin Capps followed with a basket and the Colonels had sliced the lead to one.
But, then a dry spell hit and the Colonels fell behind by six (41-35) before McCumbers nailed a three pointer at the 4:32 mark. Three straight Jackson County baskets pushed the Generals out to a 47-38 lead. The Generals led 48-39 at the close of the quarter.
Free throws again proved fatal as the Colonels tried to rally. Whitley County hit three of 10 during a stretch when Jackson County failed to score a point for more than 3 and a half minutes.
Still it was an eight-point game when Dustin Reynolds scored with 2:43 on the clock. The Colonels tried fouling and sending the Generals to the line, but Jackson County hit 8 of 10 in the final minute and a half to pull away.
McCumbers led the Colonels with 19 points while Roaden tossed in 10 points.
Whitley County played Middlesboro Tuesday night but are not scheduled again until Tuesday night when they host the Casey County Rebels.
