Former Corbin BOE member injured in crash

A former Corbin Board of Education member is at the University of Kentucky Medical Center recovering from injuries she sustained in a car crash last Thursday.

Sixty-four-year-old Debbie Cook of Corbin was taken by ambulance to Baptist Health Corbin and then transported to UK with what she described in a Facebook post as fractures in her pelvis after her SUV was T-boned at the intersection of west Ky. 312 and Curry Lane.

“Left side feels like I was T-boned by a truck going 45,” Cook stated in the post adding that it was by the grace of God that her grandchildren were not in the vehicle at the time.

The wreck occurred about 2:30 p.m.

According to Corbin Police, 66-year-old Patrick Malley of Corbin was traveling east on Ky. 312 when his 2014 Dodge pickup truck struck Cook’s 2015 Toyota SUV.

Malley told police that he wasn’t sure if Cook pulled out in front of him or if he drove off the roadway and struck Cook, but believed that Cook pulled out in front of him.

Cook told police that she had stopped at the stop sign before turning onto Ky. 312 from Curry Lane when she saw the pickup truck veer off of the road and come toward her. Cook reportedly attempted to reverse her vehicle in an attempt to avoid the collision, but was unable to do so.

Corbin firefighters were called to the scene and used the Jaws-of-Life to extricate Cook from her vehicle, cutting off both doors on the left side.

Malley was not injured in the collision.

Officials at Corbin Schools said Cook served on the school board between 1993 and 2009, including a period as board chair.

“It appears the road to physical recovery may be a long one,” Cook added in her Facebook update. “Your continued prayers are appreciated.”
