Football Yellow Jackets sign college deals
Skyler Griffith signing with the University of the Cumberlands last Friday at Williamsburg High School
Two more football players from this year’s talented senior class at Williamsburg High School have signed college deals, with Skyler Griffith committing to the University of the Cumberlands, and Collin Lamoree committing to LaGrange College in Georgia.
As a junior, Griffith played wide receiver on the first-ever Williamsburg football team to make it to a state championship game, and he led the Yellow Jackets back to the Class A state finals this past season as quarterback. He also recently helped the school’s basketball team win district and region championships en route to an appearance in the Sweet 16 state championship tournament at Rupp Arena. Being such a gifted and accomplishedathlete, it has been speculated for some time now where he might end up playing college ball, and which sport he would decide to participate in at the nextlevel.
Williamsburg faculty and staff members, school administrators, coaches, fellow students, friends, family and media personnel were all on hand last Friday as Griffith made it official that he will be a UC Patriot football player beginning this fall. Patriots Head Coach Matt Rhymer was all smiles as he personally welcomed his newest signee to the UC football family.
“We’re very excited,” Rhymer said. “We’ve known Skyler and watched him since middle school. He’s had a great career, and we know that he’s meant so much to this school and this community. He is a great student, a great young man, and a great athlete. He’s also a proven winner.”
“So many people have talked to me about him,” Rhymer continued. “And all I kept saying was we want him, and we need him. He has been a huge priority for us, and I think he is going to have a great career at UC as a quarterback.”
Griffith said of this opportunity, “Coach Rhymer has played a big role in this decision. He is a great guy, and a great coach. Plus, UC has a really good special education program, which is the field that I am interested in going into.”
“When I was a kid I always went to watch Cumberlands play, and back then I never really expected to be playing at that level,” added Griffith. “This will be a dream come true for me to finally be able to do that.”
When asked about whether or not he might try to participate in other sports during his time at UC, Griffith said that he is only focused on football at the moment, but he didn’t rule out the possibility of exploring other options in the future.
As for Lamoree, he has signed on to play as a lineman for the LaGrange Panthers in Georgia, where he and his family will be moving at the end of the current school year.
“LaGrange has been a nursing school since 1831, and that is the field that I would like to get into,” explained Lamoree. “It is Division III for football, and their head coach is Matt Mumme, son of former University of Kentucky football Head Coach Hal Mumme.”
When asked about what he is expecting after arriving at LaGrange, Lamoree said, “It will be hard. At the college level everyone is good, so I am just going to have to go in and work hard.”
Lamoree is another multi-sport athlete at Williamsburg, playing football and competing as a member of the Yellow Jackets’ track and field team. During basketball season he could be seen displaying feats of strength on the court as a member of the school’s cheerleading squad.
When asked to speak about his two outgoing seniors, Williamsburg football Head Coach Jerry Herron said, “These are great kids, and we’re extremely proud of them. We know they’re both going to go on and do great things in college. We’re just really excited, and we’re looking forward to seeing them as they continue to be winners at the next level.”
