FOOTBALL PREVIEW
Two of the teams will be on the road this week as Corbin travels to Tates Creek and Williamsburg goes to Bell County for the City/County Bowl. Here are some things to look at:
Corbin at Tates Creek
Where: Walden Stadium
When: Friday, 7:30
Records: Tates Creek 1-1
Corbin 1-1
Who to Watch: Tates Creek has plenty of weapons. But, of you are looking for one or two, you have to go with senior running back Dennis Oxendine or Marcus Wilkerson. The two were instrumental in the Commodores comeback against Harlan County last week. Tates Creek trailed 21-0 in the second half, but scoring 28 points in the second period to pull within two points at the half. Wilkerson and Oxendine had four catches from quarterback Graham Gordon for a combined 217 yards and two touchdowns. Gordon hit on 15-of-31 passes for 350 yards and five touchdowns in the game.
What to expect: Tates Creek will pull out the surprises. The Commodores attempted four on-side kicks and recovered two to get back in the game against the Black Bears. Watch for the unexpected out of the Commodores.
The victor: After the loss to LCA, Tates Creek will be over-looking the Redhounds. Corbin sneaks by with a 24-21 win.
Williamsburg
Where: Bell County
When: Friday, 5:45
Records: Williamsburg 2-0;
Pineville 1-1
Who to Watch: The key to the Lions offense is quarterback Jamie Roan. He threw for 300 yards in a 46-6 rout of McCreary Central last week. Six different Lions scored in the win over the Raiders including Andrew Douglas, Connor Ford, Byron Asher, Tanner Mike, Kyle Capps and Roan. Pineville Coach Bart Elam felt his team made a good comeback after its opening season loss to North Laurel.
What to expect: Look for more defense from the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets. In two games the Jackets have surrendered just eight points and that came in the season opener against Jellico. “I don’t think they would have scored that touchdown if our defender had night fallen down,” Williamsburg Coach Jerry Herron said.
The Jackets looked even more impressive against the Harlan Green Dragons. Jefferson Patrick ran for over 100 yards and scored two touchdowns. Junior quarterback Dalton Sizemore had a strong game, hitting on several different receivers. Sophomore Chase Lowrie had a big night for the Jackets.
The victor: How do you not pick the Yellow Jackets? Pineville may keep it close early, but look for Williamsburg to roll to a 44-14 win.
Rockcastle Co.
Where: Colonel Field
When: Friday, 7:30
Records: Rockcastle 1-1
Whitley Co. 0-1
Who to Watch: Tommy Shafer ran for 172 yards on 16 carries last week against the Frankfort Panthes and Damien McDaniel added 104 yards.
What to expect: Expect the two teams to keep the ball on the ground with an occasional pass. This could be a defensive struggle.
The victor: The Colonels ran into an experienced Russell County team last week. Look for an upset this time around as Whitley County takes a 28-21 win.
