FLAT FOOTED
Did the Whitley County boys’ soccer team overlook North Laurel Monday in a 3-2 loss? “We started slow,” Coach Bosco Cupac said of his team’s play. “We came out flat and since we beat them once already that we were going to do the same thing again.”
“We were not mentally prepared for the game,” Cupac said.
The game was intense from the get-go as North Laurel came at the Colonels. Whitley County had the first opportunity to score in the game when a handball was called on the Jaguars with 16:30 left in the opening half. Seth McCoy stepped to the line to take the shot against North Laurel keeper Joshua Harris. The ball sailed over the goal and North Laurel eased the momentum.
The Jaguars scored two minutes later when Sam Marcum kicked the ball away from Whitley County keeper Dalton Siler, who was trying to gain control of the ball.
However, Whitley County came right back and scored 45 seconds later when Josh Couch got an assist from teammate Johnny Mahan to put the ball in the net, tying the game at 1-1.
The contest heated up even more as the team’s tried to gain control. North Laurel scored in the final seconds of the half to go ahead 2-1.
Whitley County did tie the game for the second time in the second half when Mahan pushed the ball over to Haden Cane.
“North Laurel is a great team, they out worked us and wanted it more than we did and the results showed,” Cupac said. “They scored with less then three minutes left in the game.”
The Colonels are 6-6 on the season after the loss to North Laurel. Whitley County has played four games since Thursday. The Colonels lost a heartbreaker to the Corbin Redhounds 1-0 in district play Thursday. They were able bounce back to beat Garrard County 4-1 in the first-round of the Garrard Cup Saturday. They lost in the championship game to Lincoln County, 3-1.
Whitley County returns to action Thursday when they host Letcher Central in a 6 p.m. contest.
