Five Redhounds, one Wildcat represent coverage area at state wrestling championships
Last week, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association held its annual wrestling state championships at the Alltech Arena in Lexington. In the boys’ competition, a total of six local athletes represented the area in six different weight classes.
Corbin sophomore BJ Jackson managed to make a deep run in the 138-lb. bracket, starting things off with a win over senior Grayson Shelby from Ohio County in round one.
Jackson was defeated in round two by Scott County senior Jonah Baysinger, dropping him into the consolation bracket. From there, he picked up a pair of victories, first against West Jessamine senior Elliot Pope and then against Eastern High School senior Dominick Goatley.
Jackson would unfortunately see his hopes for a medal dashed in the next round after being eliminated by the eventual fifth place finisher, sophomore James Morris of Johnson Central.
Corbin’s Cyrus Greiwe, a freshman, fell into the consolation bracket of the 150-lb. tournament after a round one loss to North Oldham senior Kyle Wojcicki. He was eliminated by Scott County junior Kayne Garrett in his next match.
In the 157-lb. bracket, junior Redhound Maddox Sizemore was also defeated in round one, falling to Nelson County junior Ethan Kessinger. He was eliminated by Nathan Seth, a sophomore from Conner High School, in the following round of action.
Senior Guy Bailey managed to pick up a win in the 190-lb. bracket, but not before falling to Harrison County sophomore Brock Sexton in round one.
Bailey regrouped in the consolation bracket, securing a victory over Fairview senior Blaine Preher, but he was eliminated in the following round by Riley Burton, a sophomore from Spencer County.
Sophomore Seth Jones was the only other Redhound besides Jackson to get a win in round one, defeating Mason County senior Mecaiyon Jackson in the 215-lb. bracket.
Jones lost to North Oldham senior Drew Stearman in round two, however, and he was later eliminated by Simon Kenton senior Steven Graham in the consolation bracket.
Senior Martin Shepherd represented Lynn Camp High School at last week’s state championships, competing in the 285-lb. bracket. He lost to Ashland Blazer senior Cole Christian in round one, and was eliminated in his next match by Henderson County junior Latravio Johnson.
