First-round loss
Nothing went right for the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets Tuesday night in a first-round All “A” match-up against the Barbourville Tigers.
The Tigers entered the game with the second best record in the 13th region at 13-4, averaging just under 70 points per game (69.4).
Barbourville didn’t have any trouble getting their 14th win of the season or reaching the 70-point mark against the Yellow Jackets as the Tigers rolled to a 84-50 victory and moved into the semifinals of the 13th Region Tournament at Cumberland High School where they will meet Middlesboro, a 88-77 winner over Lynn Camp last night.
It was all Barbourville in this one as the Tigers opened with a 6-0 run and never looked back. Junior center Travis Crawford dropped in the first basket of the game in the paint.
Junior Aaron Grubb followed with a basket before a Williamsburg miss led to a Chris Good move inside the paint. Good missed the basket but picked up the foul and went to the line for the easy two points.
Senior John McRay got Williamsburg (6-11) on the scoreboard with a basket in the paint but the Tigers added five more points for a 11-3 lead.
Crawford scored from close range before Chris Jackson, the tallest player on the floor at 6-6 stepped outside and knocked down a three pointer.
A pair of free throws by Tyler Ayers and a three pointer by senior guard Kevin Caddell, cut the Barbourville lead to five.
The Tigers then went on another run of 7-0 and took a 20-7 lead in the game.
Again the Yellow Jackets came back with an Ayers three pointer and a McRay basket to cut the lead to eight at the end of one, 20-12.
The Yellow Jackets got within six when McRay drove down the lane and challenged the Tigers’ big men with a basket.
That would be the closest the Jackets would come as Good hit a pair of free throws then followed with another basket for a ten-point margin, 24-14.
After getting the lead inside double figures, 26-17 on a McRay free throw with 3:54, the Tigers scored nine straight points to lead, 35-17. Williamsburg trailed at the half, 42-22.
McRay was the lone Jacket in double figures with 11 points.
