FIRST LOSS
The streak is gone. Edgewood has been defeated. After going unbeaten for most of the season, Thornton Auto Sales hung one on the league champions Thursday, 27-24.
Edgewood wasn’t about to go down easy, so Thornton’s had to score with the high powered offense.
Thornton’s did that. They scored three runs in the first, six in the second and five in the third, jumping out to a 14-2 lead. But, Edgewood wasn’t about to let the mercy rule decide their feat. They answered with 10 runs in the bottom of the third and closed the gap to 14-12 at the end of three.
Thornton’s answered the challenge in the fourth with eight runs, taking a 22-12 lead. Edgewood scored three in the bottom half of the inning. Thornton’s scored only one run in the top of the fifth then held Edgewood scoreless. But, it wasn’t enough to put the game away. Edgewood trailed 23-15 at the end of five.
Thornton’s scored four runs in the top of the sixth and led 27-15 heading into the home half of the inning. Edgewood erupted for nine runs and pulled within three, 27-24.
That looked to set up a showdown in the seventh. But, low and behold, what happens! The teams failed to score a single run. After posting 51 runs in six innings, goose eggs were recorded in the seventh and Thornton’s held on for the upset.
Aaron Taylor led the winners, going five of six while Benny Campbell was four of six. Jeremy Taylor and Mark Rickman were three of five.
Scotty Prewitt was four of five for Edgewood with two home runs while Brent Vernon, Andy Richardson and Jamie Prewitt were three of five. Prewitt accounted for eight RBI’s in the loss.
However, the Thursday night win may have been too much for Thornton’s. Because Monday night they came out flat against the Predators. The Predators jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first three innings and went on to win 14-8.
Thornton’s closed to within 6-3 in the top of the fourth, but the Predators answered with three runs in the home half of the inning for a 9-3 lead. Thornton’s was never able to get untracked.
John Tanner and Josh Huffman led the Predators, going four of four from the plate while Bill Huffman and Shannon Taylor were three of four.
Jody Partin led Thornton’s with a perfect night at the plate, going four of four. Matt Singleton was four for four as well.
In the opening game, it was Sudden Impact rolling past Old School, 17-6. David Reynolds and Scotty Walters scored in the top of the first inning for a 2-0 lead and Sudden Impact never trailed. Old School closed the gap in the bottom of the second with a run, but Sudden Impact scored five runs in the top of the third for a 7-1 lead.
Walters was four of four while Reynolds, Michael Shrinker and Bryan Lay were three of four. Britt Lawson hit a home run for the winners.
J.T. Shelley led Old School with a three for three night at the plate.
Edgewood made the Predators pay for their lone loss with a 25-1 pounding in the third game of the night. Edgewood scored nine runs in the first, six in the second and 10 in the third to put the game away.
Scotty Prewitt led Edgewood, going four for four with a home run. Brent Vernon, Mark Vernon and Allen Petrey all went three of four.
The nightcap came down to a thrilling ending. Maiden Drug looked to be in control early when they took a 10-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh. However, Barton’s Boys were not finished. They rallied for six runs and sent the game into an extra inning.
Ben Graves drew a walk, stole second and scored the tying run on a Will Moses base hit. Moses was left stranded and the game went into an extra inning.
Maiden Drug scored six runs in the top of the eighth and Adam Prewitt got the winning run. With his lone hit of the night, he reached first on a single then scored on a Chase Powers base hit for a 16-10 lead. That run proved to be the winning number.
Barton’s Boys scored five runs in the home half of the inning, but came up one short.
Brandon Shelley led the winners, going four of five while Randy Baker led Barton’s, going three of five.
The loss dropped Barton’s Boys to 13-11 on the season with Sudden Impact close behind with a 12-12 mark. Maiden Drug upped their record to 9-15.
