Firefighters unable to save Williamsburg home

Despite using 17,000 gallons of water, firefighters from four department were unable to save this Crisp Court home late Monday. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Fire destroyed a Williamsburg residence late Monday evening despite the efforts of nearly two dozen firefighters from four fire departments.

“For the most part it is a total loss,” said Williamsburg Fire Chief Larry Todd.

The blaze was first reported about 10:36 p.m. Monday, and the structure was fully engulfed in flames when the first of 22 firefighters arrived at the 258 Crisp Court residence.

Williamsburg responded to the fire with two pumper trucks, and soon asked for assistance from Goldbug Volunteer Fire Department, which responded with a pumper-tanker, and Emlyn and Patterson Creek volunteer fire departments, which responded with tanker trucks to provide additional water.

Firefighters used about 17,000 gallons of water to extinguish the blaze.

Rockholds Volunteer Fire Department was placed on standby in the event another fire or accident occurred in the city while Williamsburg firefighters were battling this blaze.

Todd said that one end of the structure with two rooms is still standing, but those rooms were gutted.

The cause of the blaze is “under investigation,” Todd said.

The single-story house with a basement had been empty for at least two weeks. The blaze apparently started towards the rear of the house.

Firefighters were on scene until about 1 a.m. Tuesday.
