Fire damages downtown Corbin home Saturday

Corbin Firefighters just had to follow the big cloud of smoke as they responded to a structure fire at a home on Fifth and Sycamore streets Saturday afternoon.
"Smoke was visible as we left the station," Battalion Chief Aric Young stated in the run report. "Upon arrival, there was heavy smoke and flames rolling out of a window on the side of the house."
Firefighters were paged to 601 West Fifth Street at 12:27 p.m. and were on scene in just over two minutes. They had the flames knocked down within about 10 minutes of arriving.
The owner, Carol Parsons, and her son were both home at the time.
"She was in the living room when her child ran in and told her the bedroom was on fire," Young said. "She went to look and the room was full of smoke and fire."
Both were able to get out and the fire department was called.
Young said the fire did get up into the attic, but damage from the flames was minimal. However, there is extensive smoke damage throughout the home.
Firefighters were unable to determine the cause of the fire, noting the greatest amount of damage was to the bed, which was in the middle of the room.
Because the homeowner did not request an investigation, Chief Barry McDonald said no further investigation will be done.
Corbin Police and Whitley County EMS assisted at the scene.
