Fine Arts Association announces stellar lineup for 52nd Annual Concert Series
The Fine Arts Association of Southeastern Kentucky Inc. has released its 52nd annual Concert Series schedule, and performances will run the gamut from opera, to award winning a cappella vocalist, and even some 1950s Doo Wop legends.
Betty Comer, Director of Programming for the Fine Arts Association, said this season should offer just about anyone interested in the arts a reason to celebrate.
“We bring some of the most talented artists and performers in the world right here to southeast Kentucky. This year is no exception,” Comer said. “The value that you get for a season ticket is second to none.”
This season’s schedule includes:
• The Platters and The Coasters, Sept. 7, 2013, 7:30 p.m., Corbin High School Auditorium. For years, audiences have screamed, shouted, and sang along every night to hits like “Only You”, “Under the Boardwalk,” “Charlie Brown,” “My Girl,” “Shout” and many others. These songs have enjoyed decades of popularity and area having a fantastic resurgence all across America and around the world.
• Capital Opera, Presents Die Fledermaus, an operetta by Johan Strauss, Sept. 21, 7:30 p.m. at the South Laurel High School Auditorium: Die Fledermaus (The Bat) is a three-act operetta composed by Austrian composer Johann Strauss II. A man is sentenced to eight days in jail for insulting an official, but through disguises and subterfuge, attends a Prince’s ball instead. Practical jokes, mistaken identity and petty intrigue lead to a rousing conclusion. The non-profit, all-volunteer Capital Opera brings this fan favorite to life.
• Chamber Orchestra Kremlin, A high energy Russian ensemble, Oct. 14, 2013, 7:30 p.m., Conway Boatman Chapel, Union College: Chamber Orchestra Kremlin, founded and led by Misha Rachlevsky, has earned national and international recognition as one of Russia’s leading ensembles. Whether it is the highly-acclaimed CDs or its mesmerizing concerts, Chamber Orchestra Kremlin’s warmth and high energy create addictive performances that stay with listeners long after the last note has been played.
• Cantus — All is Calm: A special Christmas Show: Nov. 12, 2013, 7:30 p.m., Gatliff Chapel, University of the Cumberlands. Acclaimed as “the premier men’s vocal ensemble in the United States” (Fanfare), Cantus is known worldwide for its trademark warmth and blend and its engaging performances of music ranging from the Renaissance to the 21st century. Cantus and Theater Latté Da present “All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 by Peter Rothstein, with musical arrangements by Erick Lichte and Timothy C. Takach. Through new arrangements of European carols and war-songs for a capella voices, All Is Calm recalls the remarkable World War I truce between Allied Forces and German soldiers in no man’s land on Christmas, 1914.
• The Messiah, Performed by The Lexington Singers: Dec. 14, 2013, 7:30 p.m., First Baptist Church, London. Under the direction of Dr. Jefferson Johnson, The Lexington Singers will perform Handel’s season classic, a “commentary on Jesus Christ’s Nativity, Passion, Resurrection and Ascension.”
• Robert Cowan, Acclaimed concert pianist: March 4, 2014, 7:30 p.m., Grace on the Hill United Methodist Church. Robert Cowan has had an outstanding career, both as a soloist and as a member, with his wife, of the duo-piano team Joan Yarbrough & Robert Cowan. Mr. Cowan is now embarking on a solo tour and is proud to add southeastern Kentucky to his schedule.
• The Canadian Brass, Virtuoso Brass Quintet: April 12, 2014, 7:30 p.m., O. Wayne Rollins Center, University of the Cumberlands. Five tremendous brass musicians — each a virtuoso in his own right — form the legendary Canadian Brass.
With an international reputation as one of the most popular brass ensembles today, Canadian Brass has truly earned the distinction of “the world’s most famous brass group.
