FAULKNER WINS 5K

The Dr. Harold Mauney 5K Run/Walk was held in Williamsburg at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 8.  This annual event is presented by the Williamsburg Kiwanis Club in conjunction with Old Fashioned Trading Days.

 Dr. Elizabeth Christopher indicates that the event raised approximately $450.00 for the Williamsburg Kiwanis Playground Fund.  This fund was recently used to help provide part of the playground equipment upgrades at Briar Creek Park in Williamsburg and will be used for similar projects in the future.

 The race is named in honor of Dr. Harold Mauney, the pastor of First Baptist Church of Williamsburg from 1981 to 2000.  Dr. Mauney was a Kiwanian and avid runner who for many years was in charge of the club’s 5K race during Old Fashioned Trading Days.  After his diagnosis with cancer in 1998, he continued to be an encourager to those who walked and ran until he lost his battle with cancer in 2005.  The ties between the church that Dr. Mauney pastored and the race that is named in his honor were evident this year as the current pastor, Dr. Bob Dunston, and several members of First Baptist Church provided a watering station for runners as they passed in front of the church’s South Fifth Street building.

 

Dave Bergman, the Alumni Director for the University of the Cumberlands, and Elizabeth Christopher were on hand to present the awards after the race.
