Father charged with shaking infant child
A Williamsburg man is facing up to 20 years in prison for allegedly shaking his infant child last year.
A Whitley County Grand Jury indicted Jacob Clark, 19, of Williamsburg, Monday for first-degree assault and first-degree criminal abuse in connection with an Oct. 15 incident.
"It was a case where a child suffered an injury consistent with having been shaken. It was treated at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital for quite a while," said Commonwealth’s Attorney Allen Trimble.
The child, who was less than one year old, suffered serious injuries, Trimble said.
If convicted, Clark faces up to 20 years for first-degree assault, and up to 10 years in prison for criminal abuse.
The first-degree assault charge also carries an 85 percent parole eligibility requirement.
The Whitley County Grand Jury handed down its monthly report Monday charging several individuals, including:
• Gary Craig, 50, of Corbin – second-degree terroristic threatening.
Corbin Police arrested Craig on Oct. 28, following an investigation into a verbal argument between him and his wife that led to Corbin Primary School being placed on lockdown.
An employee at the school reportedly overheard the argument, which included a threat Craig made to his wife, an instructional monitor. While there were no threats toward the school, students or any other faculty or staff, officials put the school on lockdown as a precaution and notified police.
In the arrest report, Corbin Police Col. David Maiden stated Craig told his wife if she walked away from him, it would be the biggest mistake of her life, and threatened to retrieve a gun from his home and return to the school.
Acting on a tip, Maiden said police went to Craig’s home on Craig Drive in Corbin where they took Craig into custody. They also recovered two guns from the home that were placed into evidence.
Trimble said that the charge is a felony due to a relatively recent change in the law.
"This was a threat made upon school grounds. It related to coming back to the school with a gun," he said.
