FALL SPORTS
The fall sports season is well underway without too many surprises. The Williamsburg girls’ golf team may be the surprise of the fall, playing with some of the big names of high school golf and doing well. What is so surprising, there are no seniors or no juniors on the team. One sophomore and four middle school players. And to compete with the likes of Russell County, Pulaski County, Garrard County and even Glasgow is unbelievable.
The Corbin boys’ golf team is loaded. Coach Brad Harris can really push these young men. They are so deep they generally enter two teams in tournament play. Last week both teams finished one and two in the Corbin Invitational. They nearly did that in the South Laurel Invitational as well.
Volleyball. The teams are going in opposite directions then I expected. I thought Corbin would be down this season and Whitley County more of a regional power. Coach Alecia Elwell has done a fantastic job with the Lady Redehounds. The three-time defending champions will be a threat by the end of the season. Whitley County just hasn’t come out of the gate as strong as I thought they would. They have the talent to be a number one or two team, but so far it looks like the chemistry is just not there.
Football. I’ve got to see all three Whitley County teams play. The Colonels looked fantastic against Lexington Catholic. There was nothing they could do to win that game. There was no way the officials were going to let the Colonels come away with a win…it just goes to show you the men in stripes can make or break a team.
Corbin looked rugged in their scrimmage against Harlan County, but came back to give a good showing at Harlan last week. Caleb Watkins looked strong and Matthew Taylor really surprised me. Roman Mitchell is doing a nice job at quarterback and I think the defense looks good. However, the big test is Friday night when they play Danville.
Williamsburg is giving their best, but that might not be enough with all the injuries they have sustained. But, they believe in themselves and that’s the most important thing. We know in the movies David can defeat Goliath, but in reality can they? The only time the Yellow Jackets will go against someone their own size will be against Lynn Camp, Berea, Clinton County and those schools are larger. I believe the Jackets have the smaller numbers on the sidelines too.
That depth showed Saturday night against South Laurel. The Cardinals wore down the Yellow Jackets. You could see it coming in the third quarter. Williamsburg looked a step slower. But. what a mighty effort they gave. To give one of the largest schools in Southweastern Kentucky a fight like they did for a half was huge. Although Harlan is a Class A schools, if Williamsburg can give that type of effort Friday night, they can pull off the road win. It will be tough this week because Harlan has a big line and outstanding running back in Andrew Link.
The first three weeks of fall sports has gone by quickly, good luck to al
